No. 2 Wake Forest Defeats High Point for 10th-Straight Home Win

4/30/2023 9:19:00 PM | Baseball

Josh Hartle and Camden Minacci tossed Wake Forest’s sixth shutout of the year in the 15-0 victory.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Behind the combination of a strong pitching Josh Hartle and Camden Minacci and seven first- inning runs, the second-ranked Wake Forest baseball team won its 10th-straight home game, defeating High Point, 15-0, in seven innings on Sunday evening inside David F. Couch Ballpark.

Dating back to last year, the Deacs (37-6, 16-4 ACC) hold a 45-4 record against non-ACC teams in the regular season.

Additionally, the 15-run win helped Wake Forest move to a 50-8-1 record inside David F. Couch Ballpark since 2022, highlighted by its impressive 24-1 mark this year.

Overall, the Deacs have outscored opponents, 566-189 at The Couch since last year.

Wake Forest leads the nation in wins and winning percentage. Additionally, the Deacs lead the ACC in conference wins.

Over its last current five-game win streak (41 innings), Wake Forest has outscored opponents by a margin of 84-11.

As has been the case all season, Wake Forest benefited from strong starting pitching. Sophomore Josh Hartle blanked the Panthers over five innings on the mound, surrendering only five base runners and striking out nine.

Hartle handed the pitching duties over to reliever Camden Minacci, who induced the final six outs of the game, striking out three over a season-high tying two innings of work.

This combined effort resulted in the sixth shutout by Wake Forest pitching this season.

Wake Forest's offense totaled 15 runs on 13 hits in Sunday's contest, the 19th game this season the Deacs registered double-digit runs and hits.

Highlighting the Demon Deacon offense was a first inning outburst. Each of Wake Forest's first seven hitters reached safely as the team batted around, recorded three hits, walked six times and plated seven runs in the opening frame.

Scoring continued in the second inning of play as RBI hits from Jake Reinisch and Danny Corona increased the Wake Forest lead to 9-0. Two innings later, Corona drove in his second run of the contest as Marek Houston reached home safely to push the Demon Deacon advantage to double digits.

Two home runs in the fifth added three more runs. Brock Wilken was the first to go deep in the frame, launching his 20th home run of the 2023 season and 60th long fly of his career. Marek Houston was the second to go long, increasing the Wake Forest advantage to 13-0.

The Demon Deacon scoring concluded in the sixth thanks to a Gio Cueto sacrifice fly and a Wilken bases-loaded RBI-single.

How It Happened
  • Josh Hartle opened his 11th start of the season with a ground out and back-to-back strikeouts to retire the side in order in the top of the first.
  • Wake Forest plated seven runs on three hits and six walks to take an early lead after one full frame.
  • After giving up a leadoff single, Hartle struck out the next three High Point Panthers for a shutdown inning in the second.
  • Wake Forest increased its lead to 9-0 with an RBI-single from Reinisch and an RBI-double from Danny Corona in the bottom of the second.
    • Bennett singled and advanced to second after Cecere was hit by a pitch. The redshirt junior came around to score on Reinisch's second RBI of the game. Cecere was plated on Corona's extra base hit to right field.
  • Hartle notched another scoreless frame, stranding two High Point base runners with back-to-back strikeouts to end the top of the third.
  • After Wake Forest was kept off the scoreboard to end the third, Hartle retired three-straight batters to strand runners on first and second in the top of the fourth, highlighted by back-to-back punchouts.
    • High Point notched back-to-back singles to open the frame. Hartle responded by inducing a pop up to Wilken in foul territory before notching his eighth and ninth strikeouts of his outing to end the top of the fourth.
  • A two-out RBI-single from Corona pushed the Demon Deacon advantage to double digits after four full innings.
    • Johnson notched a leadoff single before Marek Houston came in to pinch run. Houston proceeded to steal second before scoring on Corona's second RBI of the contest.
  • Hartle faced the minimum in the fifth, forcing a groundout for the opening out before inducing an inning-ending double play.
  • A solo home run from Wilken as well as a two-run shot from Houston extended the Wake Forest lead to 13-0 after five innings.
  • Camden Minacci notched a perfect 1-2-3 frame in the top of the sixth with a pop up, line out and strikeout.
  • Wake Forest added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth as a Gio Cueto sacrifice fly scored Reinisch, and a bases loaded single from Brock Wilken plated Corona (15-0).
  • After surrendering a leadoff single, Camden Minacci recorded the final three outs of the night courtesy of a flyout and two strikeouts.
Words from Walter
"Great team win. I was really happy with the way Josh Hartle threw the ball today. He had all four pitches working and it was good to see him get his changeup going. I thought he threw that and his curveball really well tonight. It was good to get Cam Minacci out there for six outs, which we had not done in a while. He needs to be able to do that for us down the stretch.

"I was really happy with the way Danny Corona swung the bat today, I was really pleased with his at-bats. Good all around offensive performance. We threw the ball well on the mound. A good team win."
