The Demon Deacons became the first team since North Carolina in 2017 to run the table and win all 10 ACC series in a season with the Friday night victory.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – A go-ahead, two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning from freshman Marek Houston helped the top-ranked Wake Forest baseball team clinch its 10th ACC series victory of the season as the Deacs posted a 7-5 win over Virginia Tech on Friday inside David F. Couch Ballpark.
Deacon Nation set the program record for the largest crowd in program history as 3,023 fans packed The Couch for the second game of Wake Forest's final conference set. The previous attendance record was 3,018 from the 2017 Winston-Salem Regional on June 3 between Wake Forest and West Virginia.
With the Friday win, the Demon Deacons (45-8, 22-6 ACC) became the first team since North Carolina in 2017 to run the table and win all 10 ACC series in a season.
After setting the program record for regular-season victories on Tuesday, Wake Forest's 45 wins this season already rank as the third-most overall victories in program history. Additionally, the Deacs' 22 conference wins are the most by a Wake Forest team ever and its .786 conference winning percentage is currently tied for the highest in program history.
After scoring the first runs of the game thanks to a two-run homer from Tommy Hawke, Virginia Tech scored the next five runs of the contest to take a three-run lead at the midway point of the fifth.
The Deacs tied the game with three runs of their own in the next half. From there, Josh Hartle notched a shutdown sixth inning before Cole Roland and Camden Minacci blanked the Hokies over the final three frames.
Roland fanned all six batters he faced in the seventh and eighth before Minacci struck out three batters in the ninth for the second-straight night to earn his 12th save of the season.
The trio struck out 10 batters over the final 12 outs and combined to walk just one batter the entire game, marking the second-straight game the Deacs conceded just one base-on-balls.
Houston's clutch go-ahead home run in the eighth inning marked the third long fly of his freshman season.
How It Happened
"What an electric atmosphere today. I was so fired up about that crowd. I'm glad our guys responded and played with great energy today because Deacon Nation showed up and had our back and our guys showed up. I was really proud of Josh Hartle. He had some things go against him, but he came out in that sixth and got us a huge shutdown inning. Cole Roland was electric tonight. I've never seen Cam Minacci better than he was tonight. To do what he did on back-to-back days, that was just really exciting for this ballclub.
"It was good to see Adam Cecere have some good at-bats late. Marek Houston with the big home run. Lucas Costello comes off the bench and gets a big bunt hit for us. We pieced it together and found a way to win.
"I told the team after the game that coming into the season, we had some goals. We still have goals, but we've checked a few boxes. We won the regular season. We went 10-for-10 in ACC series, which is really hard to do in this league. With this win today, I think we secured a national seed. We have other boxes to check, but I'm just really proud of our team for being able to check those at this point of the season."
Standout Stats
The Demon Deacons became the first team since North Carolina in 2017 to win all 10 ACC series in a season.
This year's team is believed to be the only team in program history to win all of its ACC series in a season. Additionally, Wake Forest's 22 ACC wins are the most in program history.
After taking two out of three against Duke and Notre Dame, Wake Forest posted three-straight perfect weekends against Miami (first time ever), Clemson (first time since 2012) and NC State (second-straight season). The Deacs earned its first ever series win in Louisville and became the first team since 2021 to win a series at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Wake Forest won its fourth-straight series against Pitt, outscoring the Panthers, 40-5, in its two wins.
Two weekends ago, the Deacs claimed its third series over a top-25 opponent, taking two out of three from Boston College before claiming its second-straight series in Tallahassee this last weekend.
