SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - The No. 2-ranked Wake Forest women's golf team leads the 30-team field after the first 18 holes of play at NCAA Championships at Grayhawk Golf Club. The Deacs have a one-stroke lead over Oklahoma State and were the only team to have all five players finish even or under par for the day.
Wake's first round score of 279 is the lowest 18-hole score of any women's team since the Championship has been held at Grayhawk, and it is the lowest 18-hole Championship score since 2019. Senior Lauren Walsh paced the Deacs' record day with a five-under 67 in her first round. It is the second-lowest 18-hole score of her collegiate career, and she is currently in solo second place on the individual leaderboard.
After making the turn at even par with two birdies and two bogeys, Walsh hit a birdie on the par-four second hole. A five-foot birdie putt on the par-four sixth hole was the spark that led to Walsh birdieing her remaining three holes, to end with four consecutive birdies. She went five-under on her second nine alone to finish with a 67.
Senior Rachel Kuehn and junior Mimi Rhodes each finished two under on day one and are tied for 10th place on the individual leaderboard. Rhodes started the day with a birdie on the par-four 10th hole and started her second nine with another one on the par-four first hole. Kuehn made her turn at one-under with a birdie on the par-four 14th and went on to record two more, on the par-five 4th hole and the par-three eighth hole to finish two under on the day.
Graduate Emilia Migliaccio and sophomore Carolina Chacarra each finished even par for the first round. Wake Forest led all teams in scoring on par-four holes, was second in scoring on par-fives and was third in the field in scoring on par-threes. Wake also had the second most pars (63) and birdies (19) in the field. Rhodes was second in scoring on par-fours and Walsh led the field with her seven birdies.
The Deacs will tee off at 9:10 a.m. ET for Saturday's second round and will be paired with top-seed Stanford and three-seed LSU. Live scoring will be available with hole-by-hole updates all day.
Coach's Comments
"We are very pleased with how the team played today. All their practice and preparation this season has been for this event. It is definitely a marathon, not a sprint, but we are hoping to carry this momentum through the rest of the week. Go Deacs!" - head coach Kim Lewellen
