SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - The No. 2-ranked Wake Forest women's golf team maintained their lead after 36 holes of Championship play at Grayhawk Golf Club. The Deacs have a two-stroke lead over No. 1-ranked Stanford and have had nine of their 10 rounds be even or under par so far.
For the second day in a row, senior Lauren Walsh paced the Deacs with her second-round score of five-under 67. She is now 10-under for the event, which is the lowest score through 36 holes over the three years of the National Championship being at Grayhawk. The Deacs 36-hole total of 559 is the second lowest through 36 of the season.
After recording back-to-back birdies on her fourth and fifth holes, Walsh eagled the par-five seventh hole and hit her tee shot to three feet on the par-three eighth hole for an eagle and her third birdie of the day. She made the turn at four under par and recorded two more birdies on her second nine to finish the day with her second 67 of the event. Walsh leads the individual field by one stroke. Walsh has five top five finishes this season and eight total in her Wake Forest career.
Junior Mimi Rhodes is four under par after 36 holes, recording a two-under 70 in both her rounds. Back-to-back birdies on seven and eight had Rhodes making the turn at two under. She recorded one more before the end of the round to maintain her position inside the top 10. The England native has two other top-10 finishes this season she could be adding to come Monday afternoon.
Senior Rachel Kuehn joins Walsh and Rhodes inside the top 25 on the individual leaderboard as she sits two under and tied for 24th after 36 holes. She finished Saturday's second round even par to stay two under with the help of her first-round score of 70. Graduate Emilia Migliaccio finished day two one under for the day and tied for 32nd at one under for the event. Sophomore Carolina Chacarra is two over and tied for 62nd after shooting two over par in her second round Saturday morning.
The Deacs will tee off at 9:10 a.m. ET for Sunday's second round and will be paired with top-seed Stanford and four-seed South Carolina. Live scoring will be available with hole-by-hole updates all day. At the conclusion of Sunday's round, the top 15 teams and top nine individuals on non-advancing teams will advance to the final round of stroke play Monday.
Coach's Comments
"We've played this course three years now and we really had a solid game plan and good strategy coming in this time. We got here more rested than we have been in the past and everyone's games are looking really good. Lauren and Mimi are both playing really well which filters through the rest of the team and gives them a lot of confidence on the course. We've had nine of our 10 rounds be under par so far this week which is excellent on this course.
We're continuing to focus on recovery this week so we can come out and execute every day. So today we will get in a short practice then make sure we're rested and hydrated to go early again tomorrow. Go Deacs!" - Lyons Family Associate Head Coach Ryan Potter
