Wake Forest wore lavender jerseys during the game in support of epilepsy awareness. Earlier this season, the Demon Deacons hosted an Epilepsy Awareness Game and raised over $17,000 to benefit the Epilepsy Alliance of NC.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The second-ranked Wake Forest baseball team fell, 11-9, in extra innings to No. 17 Boston College on Saturday afternoon inside David F. Couch Ballpark.

Wake Forest wore lavender jerseys during the game in support of epilepsy awareness. Earlier this season, the Demon Deacons hosted an Epilepsy Awareness Game and raised over $17,000 to benefit the Epilepsy Alliance of NC.

Trailing 2-0, Wake Forest (38-7, 17-5 ACC) took its first lead in the bottom of the sixth with five runs courtesy of RBI-singles from Pierce Bennett, Justin Johnson, Jake Reinisch and Marek Houston.

The Eagles (30-15, 14-12 ACC) tied the game with three runs in the next half inning. After Boston College regained the lead with a solo home run, the Deacs once again responded and regained another three-run lead thanks to four runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Boston College forced extra innings with a three-run home run with one out in the ninth and ultimately evened the series with a pair of solo home runs in the 12th inning.

This marked Wake Forest's first extra-inning game since its walk-off victory against Clemson on April 16 last year.

Sean Sullivan made his ninth start of the season, tossing six innings with seven strikeouts and two earned runs allowed.

Seth Keener, Camden Minacci, Cole Roland and Chase Walter all made appearances out of the Demon Deacon bullpen.

Offensively, Lucas Costello led Wake Forest with three hits and two RBIs. Bennett also drove in multiple runs thanks to his game-tying two-RBI single in the sixth.

How It Happened
  • Boston College took a 1-0 lead after a bloop single to left center field scored a base runner from second with one out. Sean Sullivan responded by inducing an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play to strand a pair.
  • Tommy Hawke notched a leadoff single to left field to open the bottom of the first, but the next three Deacs were retired to end the inning.
  • Sullivan notched a scoreless inning in the top of the second as the lefthander punched out the opening batter of the inning before working around a walk with a pop up and groundout.
  • Adam Cecere worked a two-out walk in the bottom of the second, but a pop up ended the frame.
  • A leadoff solo home run in the top of the third increased Boston College's lead to 2-0.
  • Lucas Costello fired a two-out single to right center field in the bottom of the frame, but a fly out to deep center stranded the junior and ended the third.
  • Sullivan retired the Eagles in order in the top of the fourth with a pop up, strikeout and fly out.
  • Sullivan notched another scoreless frame in the top of the fifth, highlighted by his sixth punch out of the game for the second out.
  • Sullivan posted his third-straight scoreless inning in the sixth, stranding a Boston College base runner in scoring position with an inning-ending punchout, his seventh of the game.
  • Wake Forest took its first lead (5-2) of the game with four RBI-singles in the bottom of the sixth.
    • The Deacs loaded the bases with one out after a single from Costello and back-to-back walks to Kurtz and Wilken. Bennett notched a two-RBI single to left to score Costello and Kurtz and tie the game at 2.
    • Wilken was plated on another base-scoring knock from Johnson to give Wake Forest its first lead (3-2).
    • Jake Reinisch tallied a pinch-hit RBI single up the middle to give the Deacs a 4-2 lead before Marek Houston ended the big inning with an RBI-single of his own.
  • Boston College tied the game with a three-run home run in the top of the seventh.
    • Seth Keener forced a fly out to left field before inducing Wake Forest's second inning-ending double play.
  • The Eagles regained the lead (6-5) in the top of the eighth with a solo home run to right field. Keener retired the next three batters to end the inning.
  • The Deacs responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take hold of a 9-6 lead after eight full innings.
    • With runners on second and third, Wake Forest added a pair of runs on a high chopper back to the mound. An errant throw back to the plate made it to the back stop and allowed both Bennett and Johnson to score.
    • Costello notched a two-out, two-RBI double to left field to extend the Wake Forest lead to three runs (9-6).
  • Boston College tied the game at 9 in the next half with a three-run home run.
  • The game was sent into extra innings as Wilken was stranded at second base in the bottom of the ninth after a leadoff walk and sacrifice bunt.
  • Minacci returned in the top of the 10th and tossed a hitless frame with a pair of strikeouts as the game remained tied at 9.
  • Cole Roland took over for Minacci in the top of the 11th and stranded an Eagle base runner at second with a strikeout and groundout.
  • Boston College hit two solo home runs in the top of the 12th to break the tie and take a 11-9 lead.
    • Chase Walter struckout the only batter he faced to end the frame.
  • The Eagles retired the Deacs in order in the bottom of the 12th to even the series.
Words from Walter
"A great crowd today. We had the game right where we wanted it twice. We had a three-run lead with Keener on the mound and nine outs to get. We had a three-run lead with Minacci on the mound and three outs to get. We couldn't close it out. There were a couple big walks in those situations where we gave them too many free baserunners. The home run hurt us. Give credit to Boston College. They battled. Their starter, Flynn, and the guy who threw at the end, West, kept us in check pretty much all day. Pretty disappointed in our offensive approach at times. We didn't grind enough at-bats. Again, give credit to Boston College. They played a good ball game today. We'll answer. We'll come out tomorrow with Josh Hartle on the mound with a chance to win our eighth conference series of the year."
