No. 1 Wake Forest Stays Perfect at Winston-Salem Regional with 21-6 Victory over Maryland
6/4/2023 3:48:00 AM | Baseball
Behind 11 strikeouts, Rhett Lowder earned his single-season record tying 14th victory of the year in the 21-6 win that included an early infusion of runs on the offensive end.
Despite a five-hour weather delay, Deacon Nation created an outstanding atmosphere at David F. Couch Ballpark as 2,425 fans filled the stadium for game four of the Winston-Salem Regional.
The Deacs' 33 runs scored in the first two games is the second-highest total through two games in the opening rounds in their NCAA Tournament history:
- 34 runs (1999)
- 33 runs (2023)
- 20 runs (1998)
- 17 runs (2022)
After breaking the program record for wins in its opening game of the regional on Friday, Wake Forest (49-10) has broken the program record for regular season wins, ACC wins, ACC series wins and overall wins this season.
The Demon Deacons continue to lead the nation in wins while having the least amount of losses among Division I teams.
Head coach Tom Walter handed the pitching duties to two-time ACC Pitcher of the Year Rhett Lowder on Saturday. The USA Golden Spikes Award semifinalist and National Pitcher of the Year finalist retired the first 11 Maryland hitters he faced, recording seven strikeouts in the process. The righthander continued to hurl six complete innings, allowing just two earned runs and concluded his outing with 11 punchouts.
This outing was the third time Lowder recorded double-digit strikeouts this season, the two other outings occurring against Illinois (Feb.18) and Virginia Tech (May 18).
Additionally, this was the 10th time this season, and second night in a row, that a Wake Forest pitcher has struck out 10 or more batters in a game.

- Rhett Lowder (3)
- Josh Hartle (2)
- Seth Keener (1)
Lowder's 125 strikeouts this season moves him into the third in single-season history, passing Mike MacDougal (1999) with 11 punchouts on Saturday.
In his career, the right hander from Albemarle, N.C. is third in both wins and career strikeouts in Wake Forest history.
Michael Massey appeared in relief during the seventh and was able to record three outs courtesy of a trio of punchouts.
Joe Ariola, William Ray, and Camden Minacci all made appearances out of the bullpen in the eighth and ninth frames.
Overall, the five arms struck out a combined 16 batters while walking just four.
The Demon Deacon offense supported their starting pitcher's commanding performance by scoring four runs in the bottom of the first, electrifying the crowd and giving Wake Forest an early advantage.
Wake Forest has scored in the first inning in 33 games this season, posting a 29-4 record in those games. Additionally, the Deacs are 37-4 when they score first.
The scoring opened with a Brock Wilken RBI-single, shortly followed by a Justin Johnson RBI-double, and concluded with a base knock by Pierce Bennett plating two more runs (4-0).
The Deacs tallied two more runs in the bottom of the third as Johnson drove in Nick Kurtz on a triple to centerfield. The next batter, Bennett, tallied another run batted in on a double off the left-centerfield wall to increase the Wake Forest edge to 6-0.
Shortly after midnight, Wake Forest earned its third multi-run inning of the contest scoring three in the bottom of the fifth courtesy of Danny Corona and Marek Houston bases loaded singles (9-0).
In the bottom of the seventh, Wake Forest scored six times increasing the Deacon total to 15. Runs were scored courtesy of a quartet of bases-loaded walks (Kurtz, Wilken, Johnson, Lee), a Bennett RBI- single, and Corona sacrifice fly.
The Demon Deacon scoring outburst was not quite finished. For the second inning in a row, the Deacs scored six runs highlighted by a Corona grand slam, a Johnson RBI-single and Bennett sacrifice fly. This concluded scoring for the contest as Wake Forest increased their lead to 21-6.
Johnson and Bennett provided immense production from the middle of the Wake Forest order.
Johnson recorded four hits in five at-bats with four runs scored, four runs batted in as the Glen Gardner, N.J. native finished a home run shy of the cycle. Additionally, thus far in regional action, Johnson has totaled six hits including a double, a triple, two home runs, and 10 RBIs.
Bennett finished Saturday night with four hits in as many at bats and totaled five runs batted in during the contest.
Offensive production could be found throughout the Deacon lineup on Saturday night as each of Wake Forest's nine hitters reached base safely multiple times.
How It Happened
- Taking the hill for the Deacs in the top of the first, Rhett Lowder started his night much like Seth Keener started his Friday start: with a strikeout.
- In front of an energized Wake Forest crowd, Lowder fanned a pair in the first inning while getting a third batter to weakly ground out back to him for a 1-3 putout and a perfect three-up, three-down inning.
- In the bottom half, Lucas Costello was the first Deac to reach base, doing so via a hit by pitch.
- Nick Kurtz put two runners on after battling off multiple pitches before working a walk.
- Brock Wilken followed it up with a screaming single through the infield that scored Costello from second and put runners at the corners.
- It marked his team-leading 75th RBI of the season.
- Justin Johnson continued his hot bat in regional play with a double to left center.
- It plated Kurtz and moved Wilken to third.
- On the first pitch of the next at-bat, Pierce Bennett increased the first inning lead to 4-0 as his single to right scored Wilken and Johnson.
- To this point, Wake Forest had five consecutive players reach base and three consecutive hits.
- Bennett Lee drew the second walk of the inning for the Deacs and became the sixth consecutive Wake Forest player to reach base.
- Lowder took back over in the second with a four-run lead.
- The inning opened up with an unbelievable play in center from Tommy Hawke, sprinting to his right before making a diving play in the gap to rob a hit.
- Lowder followed that up with his third and fourth strikeouts of the game to set the Terrapins down in order.
- The Deacs maintained their 4-0 lead going into the third inning.
- Lowder got his fifth strikeout of the game to lead off the inning before getting a flyout and a groundout.
- He set the first nine Maryland hitters down to begin his first start of NCAA competition.
- Kurtz reached for the second time in the night, legging out an infield single to leadoff.
- On a fly ball to left, Kurtz tagged and moved over to second.
- Johnson ripped a liner that bounded off the wall and past the center fielder, scoring Kurtz. Johnson sped all the way around, recording his second extra-base hit of the game with a triple.
- Johnson scored when Bennett lifted a deep fly ball off the wall for a double, his second hit of the game, increasing the lead to 6-0.
- Lee worked his second walk of the game, putting two on with one out.
- With a 6-0 lead into the fourth, Lowder collected his sixth punch out of the game to start his inning.
- He followed that with a groundout to third before getting his seventh strikeout to end the inning.
- Still leading by five runs, Lowder got a pair of groundouts and a strikeout in the fifth to record his fourth 1-2-3 inning of the game.
- Wilken opened the bottom half of the fifth with a ringing single to right.
- Johnson followed that up with his third hit of the game through the left side.
- Bennett moved both runners into scoring position with a bunt to the left side.
- After a pitching change, Lee tallied his third walk of the game to load the bases.
- Two pitches later, Corona singled to right, pushing the lead back to six runs.
- Marek Houston brought a pair of runs in with a single that just got past the shortstop's glove into center.
- The bases went back to being loaded when Hawke earned a walk.
- Taking a 9-1 lead into the sixth, Lowder continued to deal, striking out the side to get to 11 strikeouts for the night.
- Additionally, this was the 10th time this season that a Wake Forest pitcher has struck out 10 or more batters in a game.

- Bennett recorded his third hit of the game and the 11th for the Deacs in the bottom of the sixth.
- Lowder turned the ball over to Michael Massey in the seventh.

- The Deacs tacked on more runs in the bottom of the eighth.
- Johnson singled home one to increase his RBI total to 10 for the weekend.

- Camden Minacci came on for the ninth to close the door on the victory.
- He did not allow a run in the final inning to finish off the 21-6 win over Maryland.
"A great win. Going 2-0 to start a regional is always a huge advantage. Somebody has to go through the losers bracket and beat you twice to advance. So, I love the spot we're in. Rhett came out and was so good so early. Those first six innings were about as good as I've seen anybody throw the baseball at this level. I was just really impressed with Rhett tonight. Our team got on the board early. We stacked some quality at-bats there in the first inning against a good pitcher in Dean. We scored four there in the first and came out in the third and scored two more. Rhett got us a couple shutdown innings and we kind of rolled from there.
"I was really proud of Deacon Nation for showing up tonight, coming back the way they did for that 10:45 start. Shoutout to Coach Forbes, whose tweet probably motivated 500-600 people to make the trip back over to The Couch. I just wanted to thank the Deacon Nation. A great win for our ballclub. It all starts with Rhett Lowder. I'm really proud of him."

This season, the two-time reigning ACC Pitcher of the Year has accumulated a 1.77 ERA in 101.2 innings to go along with a career-high 125 strikeouts.
After becoming the first Demon Deacon ever to receive the award last season, Lowder became just the second pitcher in conference history to garner back-to-back Pitcher of the Year honors (Danny Hultzen, 2010-11) last week.
On Thursday, Lowder was named one of five finalists for the 2023 Pitcher of the Year Award, as announced by the College Baseball Foundation this week.
For the second-straight year, Lowder was the only pitcher in the ACC to be named a finalist for the prestigious award given to the top collegiate pitcher in the nation, joining Grant Rogers (McNeese State), Simon Miller (UT-San Antonio), Tyson Neighbors (Kansas State) and Paul Skenes (LSU). The winner of the 2023 Pitcher of the Year Award will be announced on Thursday, June 16.
Last season, Lowder became the first Demon Deacon to be named a finalist for the award since its creation in 2009.
Lowder finished the regular season as the conference's leader in ERA (1.73), wins (12), innings pitched (88.2) and strikeouts (108). In ACC play, Lowder also led the conference in those same categories.
Dating back to last season, Lowder has allowed three earned runs or less in 30 of his last 32 starts and has gone at least six innings in 29 starts.
