6/4/2023 11:32:00 PM | Baseball
Demon Deacons total 48 scores, struck out 50 batters, and allowed just seven runs in three consecutive regional wins as the Deacs punched their ticket to Super Regional weekend.
The Demon Deacons punched their ticket to the Super Regional round for the third time since super regionals began in 1999 (1999 and 2017). Additionally, this will be the first time David F. Couch Ballpark will host a Super Regional, which is set to run from Friday June 9-Sunday, June 11 or Saturday, June 10- Monday, June 12.
With an appearance in the said Super Regional on the line, Deacon Nation came out in support of their Deacs as David F. Couch Ballpark recorded an attendance of 3,823, the second sellout of the Winston-Salem Regional and second official sellout in Wake Forest Baseball history.
The Deacs 48 runs scored over the course of the regional is the second-highest total in the opening rounds in their NCAA Tournament history:
- 50 in four games (1999)
- 48 runs in three games (2023)
- Most runs per game in NCAA opening round history (16.0 runs/game).
- 44 in five games (2001)
- 37 in four games (2002)
- 33 in four games (1998)
On the mound, the Deacs allowed just seven (six yesterday, one today and zero Friday) runs while striking out 35 batters and walking just nine.
After breaking the program record for wins in its opening game of the regional on Friday, Wake Forest (50-10) has broken the program record for regular season wins, ACC wins, ACC series wins and overall wins this season. Additionally, the Deacs became the first team in Wake Forest history to have 50 or more wins in a single season.
The Demon Deacons continue to lead the nation in wins (50) while having the least amount of losses among Division I teams (10).
Heading into Sunday's contest, the Demon Deacons held a 37-4 record when they score first. They improved on this mark as they were able to tally the first scores of the game in the top of the second. Back-to-back home runs by Pierce Bennett and Danny Corona put Wake Forest up 3-0 heading into the third inning of action.
Red hot Justin Johnson continued to produce for the Deacs as his bases-clearing double in the third increased the Wake advantage to 6-0. Johnson totaled seven hits including two doubles, a triple, two home runs and 13 RBIs in his Winston-Salem Regional action.
In the same frame, Corona launched his second home run of the night, which stands as his second multi-home run game of the year, previously occurring against Mt. St. Mary's on Feb. 24th.
This marked the end of the third six-run inning in the past two games for the Deacs.
An RBI single in the fourth by Bennett and run-scoring double by Nick Kurtz in the fifth earned Wake Forest their tenth and eleventh runs, making it the fourth-straight frame in which the Deacs had scored.
A walk by Nick Kurtz, an RBI single by Brock Wilken and Pierce Bennett single scoring two increased the Deacon advantage to 15-1.
USA Golden Spikes Award Semifinalist Josh Hartle started the game on the hill for Wake Forest in Sunday's contest. Not only was Hartle able to record the victory, making him the 12th pitcher in program history to reach double digit wins in a single season, but also recorded nine punchouts which places him fourth in program history in single season strikeouts (120).
The lefty held George Mason to one run before handing the pitching duties to teammate, and fellow lefty, Sean Sullivan. Sullivan held the Patriots scoreless in his relief outing and retired seven of the ten batters he faced on strikes.
Will Andrews and Reed Mascolo each entered the game in relief, both recording scoreless outings.
In its two wins over George Mason, the Wake Forest staff held the Patriots to one run and eight hits , compared to George Mason's two other contests against Maryland and Northeastern in which they totaled 22 runs on 20 hits.

"Obviously, I'm just super proud of this club and what we've accomplished to date. We all know we have more work to do but we're going to celebrate and enjoy this one for the next 24-36 hours and then get back to work on Tuesday. Everything that's been building, starting with last year, with the leadership group we have – Pierce Bennett and Adam Cecere being right at the heart of that. Josh Hartle and his class as well. Brock Wilken and Cam Minacci in the junior class. It's really just been a complete kind of transformation of our program over the last couple of years. I'm just really proud.
"The momentum of the season started early in the year but it kind of built as the season went on and the culmination of that is what you saw today. Just an electric crowd. A total support from the town of Winston-Salem. Our fan experience people did an amazing job all weekend. The Rhino support staff. The video content staff. Ryan Sosic and his team. A total team effort. My mom says all the time that it takes a village and she's right. To accomplish what we've accomplished this year, it takes people coming together to do great things and that's what we experienced all year. I'm really proud of this club. I'm proud of these two guys to my left (Pierce Bennett and Josh Hartle) and we can't wait to play next weekend."
