7/13/2023 1:54:00 PM | Baseball
The LifeCenter and the Living Liver Foundation are teaming up with the Cincinnati Reds for the inaugural Living Donor Awareness Game on Wednesday, July 19 at Great American Ball Park. (Reds vs. San Francisco Giants, 7:10 p.m.) During pregame ceremonies, we are honoring living donation within our transplant community, supporting living organ donors for their courage and compassion to save a life, while acknowledging the medical professionals that make organ transplant possible. The triple play of living donor organ transplant!
"Come join us in celebrating living donation and recognizing this incredible group of honorees," said David Galbenski, a living liver transplant recipient and Co-Founder of the Living Liver Foundation.
Justin Ketron (donor) and Derek Boyer (recipient): In February of 2023, Justin saved his brother, Derek's, life by donating a portion of his liver to him. Just 5 months later, both are doing great due to the magical quality of the human liver to regenerate to full size in both donor and recipient. Justin will deliver a ceremonial first pitch to his recipient and brother Derek.
Belinda Horan (donor) and Xander Horan (recipient): Xander was born with a rare genetic disorder that resulted in the need for a liver transplant. At 18 months old, his mother, Belinda, gave life to Xander again by becoming his living liver donor. He is now a 7 year old boy able to live a healthy and active life.
Coach Tom Walter (donor): Coach Walter is the head baseball coach of the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. In 2011, Coach Walter donated his kidney to save the life of one of his players, Kevin Jordan. In 2020, Coach Walter and Kevin Jordan formed Get in the Game to address social justice through conversations and service projects. Tom Walter coached both Stuart Fairchild and the Reds 2023 #1 pick, Rhett Lowder, during their time at Wake Forest.
Join us in honoring this amazing cause while the Reds continue their pursuit of a playoff berth and celebrate Living Donor Awareness Night at Great American Ball Park!

"Over 2,000 people in Ohio are currently on the transplant list waiting for a kidney or liver to become available. An individual that steps up to become a living donor initiates an unassisted double play by saving the life of the recipient of the living donation and frees up the availability of a deceased organ for someone else on the waitlist," said Andi Johnson, Director of Community Relations at LifeCenter.
