Women’s tennis is set to compete in a few in-state events this upcoming semester.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – With a new semester just around the corner, Wake Forest women's tennis has unveiled its 2023 fall schedule, announced on Friday (Aug. 11).
"We're looking forward to getting started this fall," said head coach Jeff Wyshner. "Add in the $25k UTR PTT event here in Winston during the first week of September, and there is a good collection of opportunities for our players to get the matches they need in September and October around our practices to improve."
In a familiar fashion, the Demon Deacons will kick off action by participating in Furman University's annual Debbie Southern Fall Classic around September's midpoint (Sept. 15-17). A year ago, rising senior Casie Wooten headlined the invitational's opening day by knocking off No. 5 Chloe Beck in a standout, three-set performance for the highest ranked win of her collegiate career.
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championships is slated to be Wake Forest's second test of the fall, again held in Cary, North Carolina this year (Sept. 30 - Oct. 8). During 2022, six program players competed in the event's pre-qualifying and qualifying rounds, including returners Mia Ahmad, Nevena Carton, Brooke Killingsworth, Whitley Pate, and Casie Wooten.
Wake Forest will make another in-state trip during the third week of October, pulling up to Chapel Hill for the ITA Carolina Regionals (Oct. 19-23). Having hosted this same outing last fall, the Deacs earned some hardware as Killingsworth and Anna Brylin won the A2 Doubles Championship while Maddie Lynch cruised her way to a title win in the B2 Singles flight, going undefeated through four matches.
For the third year in a row, the team will look to represent in the yearly ITA Fall Nationals, taking place in San Diego through the first five days of November. Brylin and Killingsworth earned berths as a doubles tandem in each of the last two fall campaigns.
Wake Forest brings back seven members within its 10-player roster crew and is led by a senior trio of Ahmad, Killingsworth, and Wooten. The program looks to build off of an exceptional season this past spring:
