The first 2023 fall event is in the books for women’s tennis.
GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. – Wake Forest women's tennis officially wrapped tournament play in Furman University's 36th annual Debbie Southern Fall Classic on Sunday (Sept. 17), having spent the last few days playing in multiple singles and doubles matches in a field of 14 competing schools.
Senior standout Brooke Killingsworth impressed during the weekend, picking up two solo wins, one of which included a three-set ranked victory over No. 69 Shelly Bereznyak of Ohio State. It was her first such feat over a national opponent since Oct. 2, 2022, when she downed No. 106 Laylo Bakhodirova (East Tennessee State) in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championships.
Heavy rainfall altered the event's schedule and format on Sunday, as Killingsworth made a morning finals appearance in the Singles Flight 2 section.
Mia Ahmad joined Killingsworth as a fellow Deac to tally two wins in the singles winner's bracket, doing so in Flight 10. Solo victories also went the way of Nevena Carton, Marcella Cruz, Sankavi Gownder and Jingyi Li on Friday (Sept. 15).
This was Wake Forest's seventh consecutive year partaking in the event.

"It was a solid start to our year," said head coach Jeff Wyshner. "It was nice to see Brooke lead the way and have as good a weekend as she did. Like any multi-day tournament, we saw some things that were pretty good and some that need improvement. I was proud of how we competed and our freshmen did well. Now, we are looking forward to getting back to campus and continuing to work towards next steps."
