Wake Forest is seeking its first ACC win of the 2023 campaign.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Concluding a two-match home stand and squaring off with their second ranked opponent this season, the Wake Forest women's soccer team will play host to No. 22 Virginia Sunday at Spry Stadium.
 
Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. ET, and the match can be streamed on ACC Network Extra.

Season tickets start as low as $55 for general admission and $40 for youth, while reserved chair backs are $90 for fans and $73 for Wake Forest University faculty and staff.

Deacs vs. Cavs
  • The Demon Deacons and the 22nd-ranked Cavaliers are both searching for their first ACC win of the season as both sides come into the contest with one point through two conference games.
    • Wake Forest earned a 1-1 draw with Big Four foe NC State after a conference-opening loss at Notre Dame.
    • Virginia is coming off of its first loss of the season to No. 1 North Carolina after a 1-1 draw with Louisville in its ACC opener.
  • The Cavaliers are 51st in the RPI, while the Demon Deacons sit at 96th.

Dynamic Duo
Wake Forest has been led by sophomore forward Caiya Hanks, as she's tallied five goals this season – which ranks fifth in the ACC. 
 
Junior midfielder Nikayla Small has also had an excellent start to the 2023 campaign, as she ranks second in the ACC in assists with a team-high six.
 
Chasing History
Head coach Tony da Luz is just one win shy of surpassing the 300-win mark at Wake Forest. Additionally, a win Sunday would mark his 100th-career ACC win.

The Demon Deacons have attempted 18.89 shots per game this season, which ranks fourth in the ACC and 14th nationally. Additionally, the Deacs rank fourth in the ACC in shots on goal per game with 7.56.
 
Last Time Out (Against NC State)
Wake Forest endured a hard-fought, physical 1-1 draw with Big Four foe NC State Thursday night at Spry Stadium in the Demon Deacons' ACC home opener. 
 
The Deacs (6-1-2, 0-1-1 ACC) dominated most of the contest, as they held a 20-3 edge in shots, including 13-2 in the second half. Additionally, Wake Forest controlled 61 percent of possession and won seven corners, while conceding just one.
 
After an NC State goal gave the Wolfpack the lead in the 72nd minute, the Deacs responded in the 83rd as sophomore forward Caiya Hanks sprinted down the pitch, eluding several Wolfpack defenders and leveled the game at 1-1.
 
Over the final six minutes of play, Wake Forest continued to pressure NC State's back line but was unable to find the go-ahead goal as the match ended in a 1-1 tie.
 
Of note, Hanks' tally Thursday marked her fifth goal of the season and the sixth of her career.
 
Virginia Breakdown
  • Virginia comes into the contest with the lowest goals-against average in the ACC at 0.444, which also ranks 12th in the nation. It has also recorded five shutouts, including four to open the season, which ranks second in the conference.
  • The Cavaliers have the fewest fouls-per-game in the ACC and eighth-lowest in the nation with 5.78.
  • Their 21 goals and 20 assists are the third-most in the conference.
  • Goalkeeper Cayla White leads the ACC in save-percentage (.870) and goals-against average (.413).
  • Offensively, the Cavaliers are led by sophomore Meredith McDermott (six goals, two assists), sophomore Maggie Cagle (five goals, four assists) and freshman Allie Ross (four goals, one assist).
    • Three of Cagle's five goals were game winners, which is the 15th-most in the nation and second in the ACC. She has also recorded two multi-goal games against Radford (8/20) and George Mason (8/27).

  • Wake Forest is 7-21-4 all-time against Virginia.
  • The last Demon Deacon victory against the Cavaliers came in 2012 and their last home win in the series came in 2011.
  • Last season, Virginia scored the lone goal in Charlottesville in the 49th minute.
  • The last time these two teams met in Winston-Salem was in 2021, as the Cavaliers earned another 1-0 victory.
