The Wake Forest legend won six-straight matches before falling to No. 2 Novak Djokovic.
FLUSHING, N.Y. – In a highly-contested showdown under the lights at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing, N.Y., Wake Forest great Borna Gojo fell in the round of 16 of the 2023 US Open Tennis Championships to No. 2-ranked Novak Djokovic Sunday evening.
Gojo reached the round of 16 after notching six-consecutive victories, including three in the main draw at this year's tournament.
Sunday, Djokovic came out strong, breaking Gojo and holding serve over the first two games of the match. Gojo bounced back by holding serve himself, but Djokovic won four of the next five games en route to a 6-2 opening set victory.
Gojo then responded by taking the first two games in set two. Undeterred by facing an early deficit, Djokovic stormed back to win the set (7-5) and moved just one set away from securing a bid to the quarterfinals.
Despite a resilient effort from Gojo down the stretch, Djokovic held on to secure the victory in set three (6-4) – keeping his hopes alive for a record 24th Grand Slam title.
With his performance over the past two weeks, Gojo is expected to be ranked in the ATP Top 100 for the first time in his career.
