9/4/2023 9:55:00 PM | Men's Soccer
In the first midweek match of the season Wake Forest scored a 5-1 victory over Furman and dominated time of possession over the Paladins.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Four second half goals and the second-career hat trick for Roald Mitchell led No. 16 Wake Forest (2-0-2, 0-0-0 ACC) to a 5-1 victory over Furman (1-2-0, 0-0-0 SoCon) on Monday night at Spry Stadium.
Mitchell (vs. Furman on Sept. 4, 2023 and vs. Winthrop on Sept. 6, 2022) became the first Demon Deacon to record multiple hat tricks since Scott Sealy (vs. UCF Nov. 23, 2004 and vs. Gardner-Webb Oct. 22, 2003) and the sixth Wake Forest player in program history to achieve the feat.
Mitchell scored the first goal of the night and the 14th of his career, as the junior beat Furman goalkeeper Cameron Maung-Maung on a 15th-minute penalty kick try. Despite holding a 7-2 advantage in shots in the opening frame, the Demon Deacons would go into the halftime break level with the Paladins 1-1.
In the second half, Mitchell would add a second in the 54th minute, as he took advantage of a blocked Babacar Niang shot to beat the Furman keeper. He then stepped to the spot for the second time on the night in the 70th minute to record his third goal.
Just 38 seconds later, Jahlane Forbes took advantage of a perfectly placed pass from Liam O'Gara for the first of his senior campaign. Leo Guarino closed out the night's scoring in the 89th minute for the 5-1 victory.
In total, 26 Demon Deacons contributed to the victory.
Wake Forest will next turn its attention to ACC play with a pivotal conference opener on Saturday night at No. 8 Pitt. It will be the sixth all-time meeting between the two programs and first at the Panthers' Ambrose Urbanic Field since the 2019 season.
Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the match will air on ACC Network Extra.
A Hat Trick For Roald
With his two penalty kicks and a 54th-minute strike off a blocked shot, Mitchell recorded his second career hat trick as he also scored three goals against Winthrop last season.
Mitchell became just the sixth Demon Deacon in program history to record multiple hat tricks joining Scott Sealy, Erik Brandsma, John Duguid, Henry Riggs-Miller and Wake Forest Sports Hall of Famer Mark Erwin.
Home Field Advantage
Over the last nine seasons, Wake Forest has registered 96 home victories – most in the country by 20 victories.
Home Wins Since The Start Of The 2015 season
So far this season, Wake Forest is 2-0-1 at home:
"First I want to thank the fans that came out on Labor Day–what a great crowd for a Monday night and their energy was what we needed. We just came off a really tough game at Maryland and got in Saturday afternoon. Training has been hot and we were playing against a Furman team that had eight days rest. It was a tale of two halves. I thought the first half we were on top of them a little bit, but silly fouls led to a restart goal. We weren't matched up and halftime I was a little heated in terms of the expectations that we have to focus on details and do things the right way. In the second half, the guys came out and answered. It's scrappy play from us but we dominated possession and dominated the ball. Our reactions to win the ball back after turnovers were incredible. The highlight of today was that Prince Amponsah got some minutes for the first time this season, Cristian Escribano gave us good minutes for the first time this season and we got to see Jake Swallen for the first time in over a year and a half. It's a win on the score sheet, but it was a win emotionally and I think mentally for the group as a whole just to see those guys back on the field and how much they mean to the program."
