WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – In the continued effort to bring Value to Wake Forest, Winston-Salem and Triad Communities and provide the Best Fan Experience in North Carolina, Athletics will unveil 33 brand new recognition banners inside Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Thursday prior to the women's game against Miami.
Fans will be able to see them as they enter the Joel Coliseum both Thursday and at the men's game Saturday. This reveal of new and renovated banners inside the Joel coincides with Wake Forest's basketball alumni weekend as our esteemed alums descend upon Winston-Salem for gatherings and fellowship around our two home hoops games on Saturday at 7:45 p.m. vs. Syracuse and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. vs. Georgia Tech.
In addition to updated logos and a crisp, consistent new design style, Deacon Nation will be treated to 12 new banners honoring great accomplishments of Wake Forest women's basketball. The jerseys of nine alumnae, one former head coach and NCAA and WNIT tournament teams will now be marked by permanent banners in the arena rafters. Having a jersey honored means that current student-athletes can still wear the number of the individual with a jersey that is honored. Meanwhile, there are no new banners being added for Wake Forest men's basketball but all that are currently up in the rafters are being renovated to a more modern look.
There will be a pregame announcement to direct fans attention to the rafters to celebrate these transformational female Demon Deacons.
"I want to thank director of athletics John Currie and our entire Wake Forest leadership team for their ongoing support of our women's basketball program and today's announcement of these 12 banners going up inside Joel Coliseum shows our University's commitment to celebrating the accomplishments of all the great Demon Deacons who have come through our women's program," head women's basketball coach Megan Gebbia shared. "As we continue to strive each day to build a sustainable winning program for our community, today's announcement is an important step as we honor the past, live in the present and look forward to the future for our women's hoops program."
"Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum is one of the iconic venues in college basketball and I am grateful for the continued efforts to honor the historic tradition of our men's basketball program," head coach Steve Forbes said. "These renovated banners mirror what we have seen with other schools across the conference and I am thankful to everyone who made this upgrade happen."
"Wake Forest Athletics is proud to celebrate the accomplishments of both our programs and today's announcement also significantly elevates the visibility of our women's basketball alumnae for visitors attending games and events in Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum," director of athletics John Currie said. "Each of these 10 women's basketball individual honorees impacted Wake Forest in a special way. As I think back to the reactions of Keeva Jackson-Breland and Sonya Henderson when we shared this news with them at the Trailblazer Ceremony back on Oct. 27, 2023, I'm excited to see the reactions of both our honorees and women's basketball fans this week!"
In total, there will be 12 banners that represent our women's basketball program. Two will contain Wake Forest's appearances in the NCAA Tournament and WNIT. Meanwhile, 10 will be individual banners to honor Wake Forest greats.
These 10 individuals were selected based in the following categories:
