
Record Crowd Witnesses Battle Between No. 2 Wake Forest and No. 1 Duke

More than 3,700 fans were on-hand to watch the Demon Deacons on Sunday evening, shattering a previous attendance record that stood for 24 years.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – A record 3,761 fans packed Spry Stadium on Sunday night, witnessing the top-two teams in the country battle as the No. 2-ranked Wake Forest women's soccer team (11-3-2, 6-2-1) fell to No. 1 Duke (13-1-1, 8-0-1) by a final of 2-0.
The 3,761 fans were the most for a home game in program history, breaking the previous record of 3,000 set on Oct. 27, 2000. Additionally, 1,095 Wake Forest students attended in support of the women's soccer program.
In the early stages of the contest, both teams showed their talented rosters as it remained deadlocked at 0-0 heading into the halftime break. Duke, however, scored twice in the second half to tally a 2-0 victory.
Wake Forest's attack created chances in the second half, including a 54th-minute shot from Emily Colton that hit the crossbar before Emily Murphy's second chance went to the right of the frame.
In goal, Valentina Amaral recorded two saves as the backline of seniors Laurel Ansbrow, Zara Chavoshi, Kristin Johnson and redshirt freshman Sierra Sythe all went the full 90.
This marked the fourth-consecutive game those four went the full 90 together and sixth time this season.

The Demon Deacons need just a point Thursday against NC State to clinch their second-consecutive ACC Tournament appearance.
How It Happened
The Demon Deacons will prepare for their final regular season match of the season as they take on another Big Four foe, NC State, on Thursday, Oct. 31.
The match is slated for 7 p.m. and will be shown live on ACC Network Extra.

How It Happened
- After back and forth action between the two top-ranked squads proving their elite talents through the first 15 minutes, junior Caiya Hanks recorded the first Wake Forest shot of the evening with an attempt outside of the 18 in the 17th minute that was saved.
- Wake Forest nearly struck on a perfectly executed counter, as the ball would find Hanks before she cut it back to senior Nikayla Small who had her shot deflected.
- Senior Emily Colton pushed a 31st-minute attempt just over the crossbar as Wake Forest continued on the front foot in the first half.
- The two sides went into the halftime break knotted at 0-0, as Duke held a 4-3 advantage in shots with each getting one on goal.
- Wake Forest was awarded a free kick in a highly dangerous spot just outside of the 18, but Colton's 49th minute direct attempt skied above the bar.
- Duke struck in the 52nd minute to take a 1-0 lead.
- Colton continued to pressure the Duke goalkeeper for the Deacs' opening goal, as a 54th-minute shot rattled the crossbar.
- The Blue Devils doubled their lead in the 70th minute before securing the 2-0 victory.
- The Demon Deacons are currently ranked No. 2 in United Soccer Coaches Poll, the highest ranking in program history.
- Additionally, Wake Forest sits sixth in the RPI and second in the TopDrawerSoccer poll.
- Going into the match, the Demon Deacons held the program record for the longest home unbeaten streak at 15 matches.
- It was the second-longest active home unbeaten run in the ACC, behind only Florida State's 25.
