No. 3 Wake Forest Set to Close Out Regular Season Against NC State

The Demon Deacons will look to secure either a first-round bye or home field advantage with a win Thursday night.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wrapping up one of the most successful regular seasons in program history, the No. 3-ranked Wake Forest women's soccer team is set to welcome Big Four foe NC State to Spry Stadium this Thursday, Oct. 31.

  • Wake Forest saw its largest crowd in program history Sunday night with 3,761 fans in attendance for the two highest ranked teams in the country facing off in Winston-Salem.

  • Caiya Hanks has been producing at a very high level offensively this season.
    • She has a team-best eight goals, seven assists and 23 total points, including a goal in four of the last five matches.
    • Caiya Hanks ranks seventh in the ACC in total points (23) and eighth in goals (8) and assists (7).
      • Additionally, her 18 points in conference play rank second in the ACC and her seven goals are tied for first.
    • She is now five points away from cracking the top 10 in program history for a single season.
  • Emily Colton has recorded at least one goal contribution in eight of her last 11 appearances for the Demon Deacons and is second on the team with 16 total points.
    • Additionally, her four assists rank third on the team.
    • Colton was recently ranked as the No. 2 player in the nation by TopDrawerSoccer.
  • Emily Murphy has also been incredible over her last five games, scoring three times, notching three assists and being involved in multiple other scoring opportunities for the Demon Deacons.
    • Additionally, she has 19 goals and 18 assists for her collegiate career, putting her at 56 total points.
  • Before the defeat to Duke on Sunday, the Demon Deacons broke the record for longest home unbeaten streak in program history at 15 matches.
    • During the 15-game run, eight resulted in a clean sheet for the Deacs as they outscored opponents 35-8.
    • This marked the second-longest active home unbeaten run in the ACC, behind only Florida State's 25.
    • Wake Forest has posted a stellar 16-3-6 record at home since the start of 2022.
  • The Deacs currently have three top-10 wins this season, the most for the Deacs since 2012.
  • Wake Forest enters the match ranked in the top five of the ACC in multiple categories, including ranking third goals-against average (.688), fifth in shots per game (17.63) and fifth in corners per game (6.44).
  • In goal, Valentina Amaral is 7-2-1 for her career in games she's started and has only allowed seven goals over 1,035 minutes of action for a stellar .61 career goals-against average.
    • This season, she has the fourth-best goals-against average in the ACC (.737).
  • The Demon Deacons have three players with double-digit points and seven players with five or more so far in 2024.
  • So far this season, Wake Forest has had three players selected as an ACC Offensive Players of the Week with Caiya Hanks, Emily Colton and Emily Murphy all gardening the honors over the last month.

Last Time Out
  • A record 3,761 fans packed Spry Stadium on Sunday night, witnessing the top-two teams in the country battle as the No. 2-ranked Wake Forest women's soccer team fell to No. 1 Duke by a final of 2-0. 
  • The 3,761 fans were the most for a home game in program history, breaking the previous record of 3,000 set on Oct. 27, 2000. Additionally, 1,095 Wake Forest students attended in support of the women's soccer program. 
  • In the early stages of the contest, both teams showed their talented rosters as it remained deadlocked at 0-0 heading into the halftime break. Duke, however, scored twice in the second half to tally a 2-0 victory. 
  • Wake Forest's attack created chances in the second half, including a 54th-minute shot from Emily Colton that hit the crossbar before Emily Murphy's second chance went to the right of the frame. 
  • In goal, Valentina Amaral recorded two saves as the backline of seniors Laurel Ansbrow, Zara Chavoshi, Kristin Johnson and redshirt freshman Sierra Sythe all went the full 90. 
    • This marked the fourth-consecutive game those four went the full 90 together and sixth time this season.
Scouting the Wolfpack
  • NC State enters the final regular season match of the year with a 4-9-4 record and a 1-5-3 mark in  ACC play.
  • The Pack are currently on a three-match unbeaten run with draws against Syracuse and Virginia Tech and a 1-0 win over Clemson.
    • This marks their longest unbeaten stretch of the season.
  • On the road, NC State is 1-4-2 with their lone win away from home coming in a 5-0 thrashing of VCU back in August.
  • The Wolfpack are led by sophomore forward Jade Bordeleau and senior midfielder Annika Wohner, who are tied for the team lead with 10 points with four goals and two assists apiece.
  • In goal, junior keeper Olivia Pratapas ranks third in the ACC with 71 saves this season. She has also posted the fifth-most clean sheets in the conference with five.
Series History vs. NC State
  • Wake Forest holds a 19-8-3 all-time record over the Wolfpack dating back to 1994.
  • In Winston-Salem, the Deacs are 9-2-2 against NC State and have not lost at home to the Pack since 1996.
  • Last season, the two teams battled to a 1-1 draw at Spry Stadium as Caiya Hanks scored an 83rd minute equalizer to rescue a point.
  • The last Wake Forest win over NC State came in 2021, with current ProDeac Giovanna DeMarco scoring the lone goal.
