No. 8 Wake Forest Begins NCAA Tournament Action Hosting Maryland

The Demon Deacons will look to claim a second National Championship in program history during the 2024 NCAA Tournament.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Coming off the fourth ACC Championship in program history and third in the last nine seasons, the No. 8 seeded Wake Forest men's soccer team will begin the 2024 NCAA Tournament on Sunday evening, hosting Maryland at Spry Stadium.
Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. and the match will be streamed on ESPN+.

The Matchup
- Wake Forest and Maryland will meet for the 40th time in their respective histories in the second round of the 2024 NCAA Men's Soccer Championship on Sunday night.
- The Demon Deacons earned the No. 8 national seed in this year's NCAA Tournament following a thrilling run to the program's fourth ACC Championship.
- Entering the ACC Tournament as the No. 5 seed, the Demon Deacons scored victories over No. 11 Syracuse and No. 9 Virginia while advancing on penalty kicks against No. 4 SMU and winning 7-6 in penalty kicks against No. 2 Clemson in the championship.
- Wake Forest is 10-4-7 on the year, as the Demon Deacons are 8-1-4 in their last 13 appearances dating back to a 2-1 comeback victory at Syracuse on Sept. 27.
- Maryland, meanwhile, is traveling to Winston-Salem following a 5-2 comeback victory over LIU in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday night.
- Despite going up on the Sharks 1-0 in the fourth minute, LIU scored two minutes before halftime and three minutes out of the break to take a 2-1 lead.
- Maryland, however, scored the final four goals of the match including three between the 67th and 74th minutes.
- The Terrapins have been ranked as high as No. 2 this season in the United Soccer Coaches poll, as Maryland went 12-straight unbeaten between Aug. 30-Oct. 21.
- This will be the second all-time meeting between the two programs in the NCAA Tournament, as the Deacs defeated the Terps 3-0 in the second round of the 2019 NCAA Men's Soccer Championship.
- Wake Forest completed an exhilarating run to the ACC Championship last Sunday, defeating the reigning ACC and NCAA Champion Clemson 7-6 in penalty kicks after the two sides finished double overtime knotted at 1-1.
- The Tigers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 20th, scoring off a corner kick.
- Despite the deficit, the Deacs responded as they have all year, as redshirt sophomore Nico Rabiu scored his first career goal in the 39th minute.
- Rabiu's goal was set up by a beautiful through ball from sophomore Jeffrey White, as he recorderd his third assist of the season.
- In the second half, each team created multiple changes to take the lead but neither side was able to find the back of the net before the end of regulation.
- After 20 scoreless minutes in overtime, Wake Forest went to its second set of penalty kicks in the ACC Tournament.
- A thrilling back-and-forth set of PKs would ultimately go in the direction of Wake Forest, as Clemson missed its eighth and final attempt to secure an ACC Championship for the Deacs.
- The Demon Deacons will be making their 14th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, as Wake Forest has the nation's second-longest streak and is one of only two programs nationally with a double-digit streak alongside Indiana.
- The 14-straight appearances are also eight more than any ACC program, as the conference earned a national-best nine berths in this year's NCAA Tournament.
- This marks the 12th straight season in which the ACC placed the most teams in the tournament and the 24th consecutive season that at least five league teams earned a bid.
- In total, Wake Forest has made 28 NCAA Tournament appearances in the program's 44-year existence and 23 times over the last 24 seasons.
- Including seven appearances under current head coach Bobby Muuss, the Demon Deacons have made 14 appearances in the Round of 16.
- Additionally, Wake Forest has earned six trips to the College Cup: 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2016 and 2019.
- Along with winning the 2007 NCAA Championship in a 2-1 comeback victory over Ohio State, the Demon Deacons also made the College Cup Final in 2016.
- Overall, Wake Forest is 37-23-10 in NCAA Tournament action and 16-9-0 under Muuss.
- For the fourth time in program history, the Wake Forest men's soccer team has been crowded ACC Champions, as the No. 5 seeded Demon Deacons (10-4-7) completed a thrilling run to the title with a 1-1 (7-6 PKs) victory against No. 2 seeded Clemson (14-2-4) on Sunday afternoon at WakeMed Soccer Park.
- The 2024 squad joins the 1989, 2016 and 2017 teams in claiming ACC Championships, as the last three have come under the direction of 10th-year head coach Bobby Muuss.
- Since Muuss' hiring prior to the start of the 2015 season, the Demon Deacons have claimed a conference-best three ACC titles and won a league-high five divisional titles (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2023) under the previous scheduling format.
- Additionally, Wake Forest over the last decade leads the country in total wins (150), home wins (109) and ACC regular season victories (56).

- The 2024 Demon Deacon squad exemplifies playing until the final whistle, as 15 of Wake Forest's 31 goals have come after the 70th minute.
- Despite going down a goal 11 times this season, Wake Forest has recorded four victories and five draws when conceding first.
- Wake Forest has logged comeback victories against Syracuse on two occasions, UNCW and the first come from behind victory when down 2-0 in 18 years with a 3-2 result against Central Arkansas.
- Additionally, the Demon Deacons logged ties when trailing against three ranked foes (No. 21 UCF, No. 14 Elon, No. 15 SMU and No. 7 Clemson) along with the first matchup against Virginia in the regular season.

- Offensively, Maryland this season has been led by the one-two scoring punch of Leon Koehl (seven goals, two assists) and Colin Griffith (six goals, one assist). Max Rogers, meanwhile, has tallied nine assists on the campaign.
- William Kulvik was one of six Terps to earn All-Big Ten honors, as he was named the conference's Defensive Player of the Year. He's played all 90 minutes in all but two of his appearances this season.
- In goal, Laurin Mack has recorded 49 saves and three clean sheets.
