Demon Deacons’ Second-Half Comeback Falls Short, Drop Road Test Against St. John’s

12/8/2024 4:53:00 PM | Women's Basketball

The Deacs came within three of tying the game in the fourth quarter, but were held scoreless over the last 3:00 minutes of the game.

QUEENS, N.Y. – Despite cutting an 18-point third-quarter deficit to just three with five minutes remaining in the contest, the Wake Forest women's basketball team dropped a 63-45 road contest at St. John's on Sunday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena.

The Deacs (6-4, 0-0 ACC) were led by redshirt senior forward Demeara Hinds who had another impressive game from the field. Hinds ended the game with a team-high 17 points and a team-high eight rebounds. 11 of her 17 points came in the third quarter as the Demon Deacons cut into the deficit and by the end of the quarter were within four points of St. John's (8-1, 0-0 Big East).

Over the last two games, Hinds is averaging 14.0 points per game and 9.5 rebounds per game including a double-double performance in a win over Campbell on Wednesday.

Sophomore guard Rylie Theuerkauf posted her sixth double-figure scoring game in the last seven, posting 10 points on 4-of-11 shooting and finishing 2-for-3 at the free throw line.

Forcing the Red Storm into 13 turnovers, Wake Forest forced double-digit turnovers for the 51st time in the last 52 games, with the lone game coming against Syracuse on Jan. 11, 2024. The 52-game stretch goes back to January of 2022.

The Demon Deacons posted 11 points off those forced turnovers.

For the fifth time this season, Wake Forest shot better than 75 percent from the free throw line, hitting 11-of-13 free throws including a career-best 7-of-8 makes from Hinds.

So far this season, Hinds is shooting 73.5 percent from the line which is almost 40 percent better than her career average coming into the season.

From Gebbia
"We cannot continue to lose games the same way. We were down three points with 3:30 minutes left in the game and we just didn't finish or execute the way we needed to win a game like this on the road. We are continuing to make the same mistakes. We fought and I am proud of the way we were able to get back into it, but it wasn't enough because we made too many mistakes. We couldn't hit any threes and they beat us at the free throw line. Demeara really helped us get back into it inside but we needed to have someone else step up when she got into foul trouble there in the fourth quarter. What we did today shows us clearly what we need to work on going into the ACC opener in a week. We need to get back into the gym and work on our scoring, especially from three and at the rim." - Megan Gebbia
