This weekly feature is brought to you by Truist - The Presenting Partner of Wake Forest Women’s Athletics.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Truist, a longstanding partner of Wake Forest University who is An Official Banking Partner of Wake Forest Athletics and the Presenting Partner of Wake Forest Women's Athletics brings Deacon Nation this weekly update from the Demon Deacons women's programs:
On Wednesday, Feb. 7, Wake Forest Athletics announced a $100 million initiative to further transform opportunities for female student-athletes: In Her Wake.
The news follows the tremendous momentum from the celebration of 50 Years of Women's Athletics during the 2021-22 academic year as that fiscal year saw nearly 800 donors commit over $4.1 million toward women's athletics initiatives. That tally included 20 new scholarships in support of women student-athletes. This fundraising effort will provide centralized marketing messages that highlights the ongoing philanthropic efforts creating a World Class Student-Athlete experience at Wake Forest, such as telling stories of trailblazers who came before them and the indelible mark those individuals would like to leave behind them.
Truist and other lead investors have already committed over $21 million to the In Her Wake initiative this past year, as Wake Forest Athletics aims to surpass $100 million by 2029.
Over the last two weeks, Wake Forest Athletics has shared stories of those who have already made an impact:
In Her Wake: Maeke Boreel Paul Joins Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame
Three-time NCAA Field Hockey National Champion and former All-American, Boreel Paul joined a star-studded Hall of Fame induction class, the 50th in Wake Forest history.
In Her Wake: Jeff Triplette Advances Coaching & Directorship Initiative Following Naming of Assistant Volleyball Coach Position
While serving on the Deacon Club Board of Directors, 1973 Wake Forest graduate Jeff Triplette helped create the concept of naming coaching positions to help grow a program's operating budget. Now, he's taking that concept one step further, as Jeff and Laurie Triplette have jointly endowed the Triplette Family Volleyball Assistant Coach position — providing a historical commitment to the program that will live in perpetuity and make an annual ongoing impact.
In Her Wake: Johnston Committed to Culture at Wake Forest
As Wake Forest players enter the team lounge in the new The Chris Paul Family Men's Basketball Clubhouse a plaque reads "Given in memory of Larry Johnston by Ann, Riley and Bart Johnston."
Ann graduated from Wake Forest Business School in 1981 and Larry, who passed away in 2018, was a Wake Forest Law School graduate. Both their sons, Riley and Bart, finished their undergrad work at Wake Forest. Being a part of the $7.2 million Chris Paul Family Clubhouse project was a way to show their commitment to Wake Forest Basketball and their love for their late husband and father.
In Her Wake: Halverson was a Leader and Pioneer in Wake Forest Athletics
Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame member Roper Halverson was a member of the 1975 31-win volleyball team that made a deep postseason run in just its fifth year of existence.
Also playing basketball and golf for the Demon Deacons, Halverson reflects on her journey and pride for Wake Forest.
In Her Wake: Patel's Experience with Football Highlighted Her Wake Forest Experience
Arriving on campus early as part of the Summer Bridge program, Anita Patel stumbled upon what ended up being a life-altering opportunity working with Wake Forest Football that culminated with her being head student athletic trainer her final two years.
In Her Wake: Ashley Bastron Builds Her Legacy Through Mentorship
Currently in her fourth season at Wake Forest, Bastron is excited about the trajectory of the program and takes joy in the opportunity to lead young women on a daily basis.
In Her Wake: Parker Draws Inspiration from Wake Forest Sports Hall of Famer, Dianne Dailey
When Kate Parker took her recruiting visit to Wake Forest, she was searching for warm weather, great academics and an opportunity to play high-level collegiate soccer. As it turned out, the first person in the athletic department she ran into was women's athletic director, Dianne Dailey.
