Wake Forest improved to 4-1 in ACC play and currently sits fourth in the conference.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Behind another stellar performance in singles play, the Wake Forest women's tennis team defeated Syracuse, 5-2, at Drumlins Country Club on Sunday and wrapped up a five-game road stretch.
The Demon Deacons (12-6, 4-1 ACC) took the doubles point for the 10th time this season thanks to a come-from-behind victory from senior Brooke Killingsworth and graduate student Marcella Cruz. The pair won six-consecutive games after going down 0-3 in first doubles to clinch the opening point.
In second doubles, senior Casie Wooten and sophomore Whitley Pate played together for the first time in a duals match and earned a dominant, 6-1 victory over Fonte/Sysoeva.
Syracuse (9-5, 3-4 ACC) leveled the match with a win in first singles, but the Demon Deacons would go on to take four of the remaining five courts and secured their seventh victory in the last eight matches. Of note, the Deacs won 10 of the 12 singles matches played across the weekend, including a perfect 6-0 mark against Boston College on Friday.
Freshman Sankavi Gownder earned her 11th win of the season with a 6-3, 6-4 victory in fifth singles. Her 11 wins are now tied for most on the team with Wooten and is now on a five-match winning streak, her longest of the season.
After sophomore Nevena Carton earned her fourth-consecutive victory (6-4, 6-4) in fourth singles, Killingsworth clinched the match and extended her personal win streak to five with a come-from-behind (4-6, 6-1, 6-2) win on court two.
Pate continued to impress while filling in at sixth singles, as she improved to 6-1 on the year with a 7-6(4), 6-3 victory on Sunday.
Wake Forest extended its win streak against Syracuse to eight and are now 13-4 all-time against the Orange.

From Coach Wyshner
"Really great performance from the players today and this weekend. I think Syracuse beating NC State on Friday really guaranteed that we would be 100 percent invested in today's match. We played a good doubles point, though a bit of a slow start, at 1 and 3. Marcella and Brooke really responded well down 3-0 and clinched the doubles point for us. Casie and Whitley were fire from the start, which was exciting to see. Singles was really a battle through the first sets. Whitley battling back from 2-5 to win that one helped a lot. Nevena and Sankavi were great at closing their matches out in straight sets and then Brooke rallies to clinch. Everyone played hard. Good win. Happy to get home for Duke on Friday!"
Next Up
Wake Forest will now return home for a trio of matches next weekend, including a pair of clashes against Big Four foes in Duke and North Carolina on Friday (March 22) and Sunday (March 24), respectively. A battle with fellow in-state rival Elon will directly follow the 3:30 p.m. match against the Blue Devils.
