3/21/2024 11:10:00 AM | Women's Tennis
Wake Forest will host two top-25 Big Four opponents across the weekend.
On Friday, the Demon Deacons will take on No. 23 Duke at 3:30 p.m. before a 7 p.m. clash with Elon. The Deacs will close out the weekend against No. 6 North Carolina on Sunday at 12 p.m.
Wake Forest enters the weekend having won seven of its last eight matches, including the last four. Last weekend, the Deacs improved to 4-1 in ACC play for the first time since 2019, as they took down Boston College and Syracuse on the road. Additionally, a win against Duke on Friday would mark just the third time since 2000 the Deacs opened conference play with a 5-1 record (2001, 2019).
In singles, freshman Sankavi Gownder and senior Casie Wooten lead the team with 11 victories in dual play this campaign. Gownder is currently on a five-match winning streak, her longest of the season.
Sophomore Whitley Pate has been stellar in sixth singles since stepping in at the beginning of March. She has posted a 7-1 record in dual play this season and has won three-consecutive matches.
The Demon Deacons have a plus-.500 winning percentage in all six singles positions this season and are at least .600 in five of the six. Additionally, the Deacs are an impressive 12-3 (.800) in positions four-through-six against ACC opponents.

The Demon Deacons (12-6, 4-1 ACC) took the doubles point for the 10th time this season thanks to a come-from-behind victory from senior Brooke Killingsworth and graduate student Marcella Cruz. The pair won six-consecutive games after going down 0-3 in first doubles to clinch the opening point.
In second doubles, senior Casie Wooten and sophomore Whitley Pate played together for the first time in a duals match and earned a dominant, 6-1 victory over Fonte/Sysoeva.
Syracuse (9-5, 3-4 ACC) leveled the match with a win in first singles, but the Demon Deacons would go on to take four of the remaining five courts and secured their seventh victory in the last eight matches. Of note, the Deacs won 10 of the 12 singles matches played across the weekend, including a perfect 6-0 mark against Boston College on Friday.
Freshman Sankavi Gownder earned her 11th win of the season with a 6-3, 6-4 victory in fifth singles. Her 11 wins are now tied for most on the team with Wooten and is now on a five-match winning streak, her longest of the season.
