No. 6 Wake Forest Downs Belmont Abbey, 5-2

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Behind an impressive 5-1 record in singles, the No. 6-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team defeated in-state foe Belmont Abbey, 5-2, Wednesday evening at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.

With the victory, the Demon Deacons (20-4, 5-1 ACC) improved to an impressive 22-4 against schools in the state of North Carolina since the start of the 2022 campaign. Additionally, Wednesday marked the Deacs' 10th-straight win, dating back to March 1.

Belmont Abbey (16-13, 1-1 CC) got off to a strong start, snapping Wake Forest's four-match streak of winning the doubles point behind wins on courts two and three, respectively.

The Deacs immediately responded, winning four-consecutive singles matches in less than an hour to clinch the victory. Graduate student Jamieson Nathan closed the contest with a 6-4, 6-2 win in fifth singles.

Nathan is currently on a three-match winning streak in dual singles action, with each of his three victories coming in straight sets.

Of note, junior Noah Hahn made his first appearance of the 2024 campaign Wednesday.

How It Happened

Doubles play opened tightly contested as Wake Forest led on court one, while Belmont Abbey led on courts two and three, respectively.
- Filippo Moroni/Luciano Tacchi quickly took first doubles, 6-1.
Belmont Abbey then evened the doubles ledger, taking second doubles, before clinching the doubles point with a 6-2 win on court three.
Wake Forest trailed, 1-0, going into singles action.
- Wednesday snapped the Deacs' four-match streak of winning the doubles point.
The Demon Deacons came out strong in singles, taking the first set on five courts.
Less than an hour into singles play, Wake Forest tied the contest as Saud Alhogbani earned a 6-0, 6-2 win on court four.
Moments later, Luciano Tacchi knocked off Christian Winstead (6-3, 6-1) in second singles to give the Demon Deacons a 2-1 lead.
Filippo Moroni then extended the Deacs' advantage, defeating Chase Martin on court one.
Matthew Thomson clinched Wake Forest's 10th-straight victory seconds later, earning a 6-1, 6-4 win on court three.
- Belmont Abbey added a point with a victory on court five.
With just one court remaining, Jamieson Nathan knocked off Charlie Fremaux (6-4, 6-2) to close the contest.
Wake Forest defeated Belmont Abbey, 5-2.
