Wake Forest Primed for Pair of Road Matches Against Virginia Tech, Virginia

The Demon Deacons will look to extend their winning streak over the Hokies to nine-consecutive matches.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Following a three-match home weekend, the Wake Forest women's tennis team is set to hit the road this weekend for clashes with ACC foes Virginia Tech and Virginia on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.

Thursday's match against the Hokies is scheduled for 3 p.m., while first serve against the Cavaliers on Saturday is set for 1 p.m. 

In singles, freshman Sankavi Gownder and senior Casie Wooten lead the team with 12 victories in dual play this campaign. Gownder 2-0 in both the third and fourth singles spots this season and 8-4 in fifth position. Wooten has competed in first singles all season and has dropped just four matches.

Sophomore Whitley Pate has been stellar in sixth singles since stepping in at the beginning of March. She has posted a 8-3 record in dual play this season and is tied for the third-most wins on the team.

The Demon Deacons have a plus-.500 winning percentage in all six singles positions this season and are at least .600 in five of the six. Additionally, the Deacs are an impressive 7-3 (.700) in positions one and two against ACC opponents.

Scouting the Opposition
Virginia Tech enters the match having won its last two matches with a home sweep over Boston College and Syacuse last weekend. The Hokies hold an 8-7 overall record this campaign and are 3-4 in ACC play. At home, Virginia Tech is 6-2 with just one loss since the beginning of February.

The Hokies are led by junior Semra Aksu, who has posted an 11-4 record and has won her last seven matches while playing anywhere from third to sixth singles. She is the only Virginia Tech player this season that holds a winning record in singles. In doubles, the Hokies are over .600 in all three slots, including a 17-7 record in first and second doubles combined.

Virginia comes into the weekend ranked No. 6 in the nation and holds a percent 7-0 conference record and is 15-2 overall. It has won eight-consecutive matches with its only two losses coming to No. 5 Michigan.

The Cavaliers have three singles players and three doubles teams ranked, led by No. 25 Hibah Shaikh. She is 10-2 in dual play this season while rotating between first and second singles. Shaikh is also a part of the No. 27-ranked doubles pairing with Natasha Subhash. The duo is 11-2 together this season and 8-1 in second doubles.
