Deacs Run Rule Boston College in Series Opener
4/12/2024 7:16:00 PM | Baseball
Juniors Nick Kurtz and Seaver King both homered for the fourth-straight game while Kurtz continued his streak of seven-straight games with a home run.
Offensively, the Deacs were led by junior Seaver King's three hits, including his 11th homer of the year and fourth-straight game with a homer. The transfer added his second triple of the year, finishing a double shy of Wake's first cycle since 2000. The Athens, Ga. native has multi-RBI in the last four games and is the first Deac to hit the 40 RBI mark this season.
First baseman Nick Kurtz homered for the seventh-straight game and grabbed the team lead with 14 on the year, finishing 2-for-5 with a pair of extra-base hits and a team-high three RBI.
Sophomore Jack Winnay stayed hot with a two-hit, two-RBI day, adding a pair of singles.
With the eight strikeouts, junior righthander Chase Burns became the first pitcher in the country to go over the century mark with an NCAA-leading 105 strikeouts on the year. Burns improves to 7-1 on the year and the Deacs are 8-1 this season when he takes the mound.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Shortstop Marek Houston earned a leadoff walk to start the contest, but the Deacs were unable to scratch a run across in the top of the first.
- Starter Chase Burns picked up a pair of strikeouts in his first inning of work against the Eagles.
- Junior Seaver King lifted a ball off the wall in right field for his second triple of the year and would come home a pitch later on a single from Javar Williams to put the Deacs up 1-0 in the top of the second.
- Burns became the first pitcher in the country to reach the 100 strikeout mark this season with his first punchout in the second.
- He quickly grabbed 101 for the third out of the inning.
- With one away in the fourth, second baseman Adam Tellier roped a pitch to right field for a single, and came home on a perfectly executed hit-and-run from junior Nick Kurtz to make it 2-0 in favor of Wake Forest on the double from Kurtz.
- Playing minutes from his hometown, Newton, Mass. native Jack Winnay plated Kurtz with an RBI single to left center to stretch the lead to 3-0.
- Boston College picked up their first hit of the afternoon in the bottom of the fourth but a lineout, strikeout and flyout got Burns back in the dugout.
- For the fourth-straight game, King left the yard, depositing a 1-2 pitch over the wall in left field to extend the lead to 4-0.
- Burns picked up his sixth strikeout of the game in a three-up, three-down bottom of the fourth.
- The Eagles got on the board with an unearned run to make it 4-1 after five complete innings.
- Wake Forest immediately answered back with three runs in the sixth.
- Winnay laced a leadoff single to right field.
- Reinisch doubled to left field to plate Winnay and immediately got the run back for the Deacs.
- King collected his third hit of the afternoon with a single to left field and advanced to second on a sac bunt from freshman Javar Williams.
- After King stole third for his seventh bag of the year, catcher Cameron Gill drove him in to make it 7-1 on a fielder's choice.
- Burns made quick work of the Eagles in the sixth with another 1-2-3 inning.
- Homering for the 11th time in seven games, Kurtz launched a hanging breaking ball 411-feet just to the right of the batter's eye in center field to make it 9-1 going into the stretch.
- The Deacs added four runs in the eighth to push the lead to 13-1.
- Williams made it to third on a three-base error by the B.C. shortstop to start the frame and scored on an RBI single back up the middle by Gill.
- Freshman Cam Nelson singled to center field to move Gill to third and went to second on a passed ball.
- Boston College's second error of the plated Gill to make it 11-1.
- Tellier's second hit of the day plated Nelson for an even dozen for the Deacs.
- The Deacs final run of the day came on a Winnay sac fly to left to play Houston.
- Leftie Crawford Wade picked up the final five outs of the ballgame to seal the 13-1 win for the Deacs in eight innings.

FROM COACH WALTER
"That's a good team win with a really good offensive day from Nick Kurtz, Seaver King, Adam Tellier and Jack Winnay. They all had big days for us to get three less out and save our bullpen.
Chase Burns was really good again today and Crawford Wade really came in and threw the ball well. I was really happy with our defense today. Seaver, Nick and Tellier all made a couple of plays with the gloves that helped Burns and allowed him to extend his outing.
I was happy with the way we played in all three phases of the game." - head coach Tom Walter
