Deacon Sports Xtra: Wake Forest Set to Host 40-Team Field at the Wake Forest Invitational at Kentner Stadium
4/18/2024 11:15:00 AM | Track and Field
Forty teams will head to Winston-Salem for the second-annual Wake Forest Invitational.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The second-annual Wake Forest Invitational is set to take place on Friday, April 19th at Kentner Stadium. Last year marked the first time Wake Forest men's and women's track and field programs hosted a meet on the Reynolda Campus in over six years.
One of the premier meets slated to take place on the East Coast heading into postseason action, the Wake Forest Invitational will provide an excellent opportunity for student-athletes from across the country to qualify for NCAA Regionals.
Please be aware that this means that a starter gun will be shot off throughout the day on Friday.
Last season, 12 athletes set new facility records during the 2023 Wake Forest Invitational. Two of the new facility records were broken by Wake Forest student-athletes. In the men's 800m, Rynard Swanepoel set the new top time in the 800m with a time of 1:47.38. Leia Braunagel also recorded the new women's discus facility record with a 56.67m throw.
"I'm super excited about our meet on Friday," said director of track & field and cross country John Hayes. "We have some of the top runners and competitors on the East Coast coming in. We also are going to have past Olympians and future Olympians competing."
Forty programs are expected to participate in the meet, including fellow Big Four schools Duke, North Carolina and NC State in addition to ACC schools Florida State, Notre Dame, Pitt and Virginia Tech.
Competition is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. Friday morning, while the last event is tentatively due to begin at 10:40 p.m. Live results for the Wake Forest Invitational can be found here.
Recognitions
Of note, 23 seniors from the Wake Forest men's and women's track & field teams will be recognized during Friday's meet for their time and dedication as Wake Forest student-athletes.
Fun Events & More
In addition to Friday's competition, there will be entertaining events such as a parents and alumni tailgate, a Deacon 4x100m relay and an alumni mile.
