Deacon Sports Xtra: Representing Well

Andrew Carr will represent as a lone student athlete on committees at the 2024 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament’s Final Four this upcoming weekend.
Andrew Carr transferred into Wake Forest from Delaware two years ago in May 2022 and made an immediate impact on the court for the Demon Deacons. He's started every game since his arrival, averaging 13.5 points and 6.8 rebounds this past 2023-24 season while eclipsing 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 100 blocks in his career.
Carr is also making a significant impact off the court as well, serving on two national committees, including the NCAA Competition Committee, which will see him traveling to the Final Four this weekend (April 5-6) in Glendale, Arizona.
"I'm representing all of men's basketball," Carr explained. "It's from a student-athlete perspective. So I'm the only student athlete on that call, which is an honor and really cool to be able to experience that. We've met twice so far and then it'll be really cool to get an in-person meeting at the Final Four.
"It's been every two months or so for meetings. We had our last online Zoom meeting, up until the Final Four, and just wanted to set it up for what we were wanting to talk about in that and see what we were really able to discuss to hopefully make some changes."
He can't wait to get to work with the committee in Glendale later this week.
"I think the in-person meeting is going to be really important and I am trying to see exactly what we would be able to accomplish," Carr said. "Just because a lot of these things that people are talking about have been in the works for a really long time, and so trying to really figure out what, for one or two years that I'm on the committee, what could we actually really accomplish?"
It's no surprise to see Carr take the reins of leadership, as he's been serving on the NCAA Student Engagement Committee for the last year, which includes one basketball player from each conference, which means Carr is representing the ACC.
"There's usually around 40 or so people on that call and we'll meet about once a month," Carr explained. "We've been able to talk about a lot of different things. Sometimes the meetings have some guest speakers and some other cool people to network with, which has been awesome."
The Student Engagement Committee works on ways to make the student-athlete life better both on and off the court, tackling topics like summer exhibitions and more frequent overseas trips.
"We're trying to figure out what would be best for the student athletes and maybe get some exhibitions or something like that at the end of the summer," Carr said. "You just get a perspective from every conference when you talk about that type of stuff. So it's pretty cool.
"Right now, you go two-to-three months when you don't get to play anybody except battling super hard against your teammates in practice. So, it would be nice to set a goal as a team to be able to look at playing someone else during that time. Something like that would be really beneficial to the players, the teams and the coaches."
After serving on the Student Engagement Committee, Carr heard they were looking for applicants to the Competition Committee, so he threw his proverbial hat in the ring. He worked with Senior Associate Athletic Director (Student-Athlete Development) Arin Dunn, Deputy Athletic Director Lindsey Babcock and Wake Forest Athletic Director John Currie to get the spot.
"Arin Dunn has been great and important with helping getting those types of opportunities," Carr said. "But then also talking with John Currie, of course, and Lindsey Babcock and a couple of those people to really get good recommendations and try to be able to get a good reference to be able to apply. I really wanted to be a part of that committee."
These leadership characteristics are nothing new for Carr, as it's something that comes to the surface not just in his first two collegiate seasons at Delaware, but also going back to his high school years.
"I think it's always been something that I've been interested in," he said. "I was pretty involved in SAAC at Delaware as well, and was in student council in high school. So, it kind of has been something that I've been interested in. I feel like my whole life, representing a group of people leading and having those types of conversations, came easy to me.
"Trying to be able to utilize that God-given talent, and be able to kind of present what a lot of bigger groups of people want, has really been really cool and something that I try to take pride in to do the best job I can."
In two power-packed years both on and off the court, Carr finds himself appreciative of all the opportunities he's encountered during his time at Wake Forest.
"It has been unbelievable," he said. "I think, and I might even say I haven't taken advantage of all the opportunities. They're really endless here, trying to do as much as we can, but it's really awesome – the different people that you could run into around Wake and just the amount of support that people have. If someone is interested in this side of basketball, there's so much more that goes on off the court that people are there and ready to help and really want to support you in exactly what you want to do. It's really been awesome."
