Wake Forest 20 (-1) – Wake Forest wins the playoff
Heading into the day, Wake Forest was eight strokes back of BYU and with the help of the third-lowest score on the course, surged up the leaderboard to punch their ticket to Carlsbad, Calif. for the NCAA Championships. The 48 appearances in the NCAA Championship are the most in ACC history and are tied for the 10th most in NCAA history.
Wake Forest had a strong start to the day as the team was 10-under through the first five holes and were 9-under-par entering the turn.
The Demon Deacons got big under-par rounds from Meisel and freshman Tom Haberer to pace the push up the leaderboard. Meisel had the lowest score of the day, finishing with a final round 69 (-2) with just one bogey on his scorecard.
Like Meisel, Haberer hit the turn at 3-under-par and stayed under-par for the entire round including picking up a key birdie on his 16th hole of the round to end the day with a 70 (-1).
Brennan finished as the top Demon Deacon on the individual leaderboard, tying for fifth at 5-under-par for the tournament. During Brennan's four years as a Demon Deacon, this will be his third trip to the NCAA Championship.
Juniors Collin Adams and Scotty Kennon also placed inside of the top 30 on the individual leaderboard with Adams claiming a tie for 25th at 2-over-par while Kennon was just one stroke back of Adams and tied for 30th.
This marks the 13th NCAA Championship appearance under the direction of head coach Jerry Haas including the fourth in the last five years. The Deacs have finished inside of the top 10 four times under Haas' direction including making match play during the 2019 NCAA Championship and finishing tied for third in 2006.
From Coach Haas
"We got off to a fantastic start today and everybody was hanging in there. The wind picked up a little bit on the front side however we missed a few putts we normally would make. We had a great birdie by Marshall in the playoff and a good save by Scotty Kennon and Collin Adams and Tom Harber for making good putts for par. Everybody is now even par starting the week. We just needed to get through and give ourselves a chance. I have been doing this a long time and this is one of the most satisfying regionals I've been to in the fact that we had a great spring just to get this far and seem to be peaking at the right time. I'm very happy for these guys, very happy for them. It is great to see the NCAA Championship at LaCosta as it will be there for the next few years."-head coach Jerry Haas
