
Thirteen Demon Deacons Headed to NCAA Outdoor Track & Field East Regionals

The road to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon begins Wednesday.
LEXINGTON, KY. - Following an impressive performance at the ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams will continue the postseason at the 2024 NCAA East Regionals at the University of Kentucky Outdoor Track & Field Facility in Lexington, Ky.
Last season at the NCAA East Regionals in Jacksonville, Luke Tewalt and Zach Facioni advanced to the finals of the men's 5000m. Facioni placed sixth with a time of 13:54.15 and Tewalt finished 16th with a time of 14:04.79.
The NCAA East Regionals are slated to begin on Wednesday, May 22nd at 10:00 a.m. ET with the men's hammer. Live results for this week's events can be found here and the meet will be streamed at 6:00 p.m. on ESPN+.

ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships
ATLANTA - The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams garnered 11 All-ACC athletes and 19 scorers over the course of the 2024 ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Georgia Tech. The Demon Deacons were the most efficient team in Atlanta with 13 of the 22 athletes scoring in their respective events.
In the women's discus, the Demon Deacons added another podium finish and scorer to their overall total. Leia Braunagel capped off her impressive senior campaign with a 58.79m throw earning her first team All-ACC honors. Brauangel's throw set a new personal-best and marked the third time this season she broke her own longest throw record at Wake Forest. Additionally, Ashlyn Giles placed fourth and earned second team All-ACC honors with a personal-best throw of 53.13m. Giles' throw also sits at second amongst the longest throws in program history. Finally, Amanda Schaare scored for the Deacs with a seventh place finish and a 49.81m throw.
Freshman Rocky Hansen placed sixth in the men's 1,500m final on Saturday afternoon. Hansen ran a time of 3:43.52 and secured second team All-ACC honors in his first year in the old gold and black.
As the afternoon slate began to heat up in Atlanta, Thomas Kitchell finished fourth in the men's discus final with a 55.06m throw earning him second team All-ACC honors. Additionally, Connor Mathis scored in the men's discus with a seventh place finish and a 50.66m throw.
On the track, Rynard Swanepoel and Jack Balick both garnered All-ACC honors in the men's 800m final. Swanepoel took first team All-ACC honors with a second place finish and time of 1:46.69. Balick finished fifth with a 1:47.68 800m and second team All-ACC honors.
In the final event for the Deacs, Brooke Wilson scored with a seventh place finish and a time of 16:03.05 in the women's 5,000m final.
Rewriting the Record Books
During the 2024 outdoor campaign, five Demon Deacons set new program records along with 11 other Deacs that tabbed top-10 program marks. Leia Brauangel broke her own school record in the women's discus twice during the season with a 57.85m throw at the Stanford Invitational and a 58.44m throw at the Vertklasse Meet.
At the Beach Invitational, Robbie Grace set the new Wake Forest record in the women's long jump with a 6.38m jump. With a program-best jump in the indoor season, Grace now holds the record outdoors and indoors in the women's long jump.
At the second-annual Wake Forest Invitational Megan Cook and Rynard Swanepoel broke program records in their respective events in front of an energetic crowd. In the women's hammer, Cook claimed first and set the new Wake Forest record with a 60.21m throw. Additionally, Swanepoel set the new record in the men's 800m with a time of 1:45.84.
