The talented rising junior earned numerous honors during his first two collegiate seasons including being named A-10 Rookie of the Year and second-team All-A-10.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest men's soccer has announced the addition of 2022 A-10 Rookie of the Year and TopDrawerSoccer Freshman XI first-team selection Basit Umar, the program announced on Friday.
"Basit is an exciting player that brings with him two years of college soccer experience, along with international professional training and competing with the well-known Right to Dream Academy in Ghana," said head coach Bobby Muuss. "He has the ability to play in a number of positions. We look forward to adding his competitiveness and desire to get better in our environment with a very eager and experienced group."
Umar spent the past two seasons at Dayton, appearing in 29 matches with 23 starts to record 14 points off five goals and four assists.
During his debut campaign with the Flyers in 2022, Umar was named A-10 Rookie of the Year, second-team All-A-10, the A-10 all-rookie team and was selected to TopDrawerSoccer's Freshman XI first-team.
In his collegiate debut, the Ghanaian native played 86 minutes and logged an assist in a 5-0 victory over Cal Poly. During his freshman season, Umar also recorded goals in victories over West Virginia and VCU along with striking in a 2-2 draw at No. 2 Kentucky.
He played all but four minutes in Dayton's last eight matches of the 2022 campaign.
As a sophomore, Umar – who was named to the United Soccer Coaches' top-25 midfielders to watch list – appeared in 12 matches with 10 starts to record six points off two goals and two assists. In his final match of the 2023 season, Umar collected a career-high four points with two assists and a goal in just 38 minutes against Loyola Chicago.
In total, he earned 90 or more minutes of action nine times at Dayton.
Umar is the latest addition to Wake Forest's top-five nationally ranked incoming recruiting class by TopDrawerSoccer, which includes mid-year enrollees Pariss Mitchell, Daniel Krueger and Pierce Bateson.
