9/19/2024 10:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer

The Demon Deacons and Tigers will be meeting for the 56th time since Wake Forest’s inaugural season in 1980.

CLEMSON, S.C. – Wake Forest men's soccer and No. 4 Clemson will reignite one of college soccer's best matchups on Friday night, as the Deacs and Tigers will face off at Historic Riggs Field.

Kick-off for the match is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and the match will air nationally on the ACC Network.

The Matchup
  • Two of the top programs out of the ACC over the last decade, Wake Forest (2-2-3, 0-0-1 ACC) and Clemson (3-1-2, 1-1-0 ACC)  will meet in a marquee conference clash on Friday night.
  • The Demon Deacons are coming off a three-match homestand in which Wake Forest defeated Radford 1-0 while drawing with Virginia 1-1 in the ACC opener before another 1-1 draw with No. 10 Elon.
  • Clemson, meanwhile, is 3-1-2 on the year and undefeated over its last three matches with victories over Loyola Maryland (6-0) and Boston College (2-2) before drawing with Holy Cross (2-2) on Tuesday.
  • Since 2015, Wake Forest (142) and Clemson (129) rank first and third nationally in total wins while holding the same rankings in the country in home wins (Wake Forest 104, Clemson 84) during that span.
  • During the ACC's divisional format from 2014-23, Wake Forest (five) and Clemson (four) combined to win nine of 10 Atlantic Division titles.
  • Additionally, from 2015-23 Wake Forest (52) and Clemson (41) ranked first and tied for second in ACC regular season wins.
Last Time Out
  • Facing its second ranked opponent of the 2024 campaign, Wake Forest on Tuesday night drew 1-1 with No. 10 Elon in the program's annual Mental Health Awareness Match.
  • Despite Elon taking an early 1-0 lead, Wake Forest's consistent pursuit for an equalizer happened in the 80th minute as senior Babacar Niang scored on the Deacs' 26th shot of the evening.
  • The goal marked Niang's fourth of the season, as junior Basit Umar and freshman Amoni Thomas registered their first assists of the year.
  • Wake Forest finished the night with 71 percent of possession while dominating in shots (29 to nine), shots on goal (14 to two) and corner kicks (11 to one).
  • With the result, Wake Forest is now 0-0-2 on the year against ranked foes as they drew with then-No. 21 UCF 1-1 on Aug. 31.
Looking To Turn Opportunities Into Goals
  • As Wake Forest progresses deeper into the 2024 season, the Demon Deacons are looking to turn more of the quality opportunities they've created into goals.
  • Through Tuesday night's action, Wake Forest ranks No. 1 nationally in total shots (144) and shots per match (20.57). The Demon Deacons are one of only three programs in the country to average more than 20 shots per match, joined by Dayton (20.4) and Syracuse (20.14).
  • Additionally, Wake Forest ranks top-five nationally in shots on goal (58; 2nd) and shots on goal per match (8.29; 5th).
  • In total, the Demon Deacons have outshot opponents to 144-64 this season with a majority of those attempts coming in the second half (88).
  • In the Deacs' 3-2 comeback victory over Central Arkansas and the three draws in which they've responded after going down 1-0, Wake Forest has outshot opponents 83-28 after conceding.
Scouting the Tigers
  • Clemson so far to date has scored victories over Penn State, Loyola Maryland and Boston College while also drawing with South Carolina and Holy Cross.
  • Four different Tigers this season have recorded five or more points, led by Alex Meinhard and Misei Yoshizawa each tallying three goals.
  • Defensively, Clemson has registered three clean sheets as Joseph Andema has recorded 17 saves.
  • The Deacs hold a 26-21-8 all-time record against the Tigers and will be looking for their 10th victory on the road against Clemson.
  • Wake Forest has an 8-4-2 record against Clemson under 10th-year head coach Bobby Muuss with two of those victories coming on the road.
Looking Ahead
  • Wake Forest will remain on the road for ACC play next Friday, facing Syracuse in New York.
  • Kick-off for the match is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
