Senior guard Raegyn Conley set a new career high with 18 points on six three-pointers.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Despite outscoring the Cardinal 29-16 in the fourth quarter, the Wake Forest women's basketball team fell, 74-71, Thursday evening against Stanford inside Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
Individually, senior guard Elise Williams led the Demon Deacons (7-10, 0-6 ACC) in points (19), assists (4), rebounds (5) and steals (6). Her 19 points and six steals both set a season-high.
Since returning from injury, Williams is averaging 16.0 points per game and has now scored at least 10 points in all four games since her return. Additionally, it marked the first time this season a Demon Deacon has recorded four or more assists without a giveaway and the second time in her career she did so.
Senior guard Raegyn Conley set career-highs in points (18) and three-pointers (6-of-10) off of the bench. It marked the first time in the HerHoopsStats era that a Demon Deacon has made at least six three pointers on 60 percent or better shooting from deep.
With high-scoring performances from Williams and Conley, it marked the first time since Nov. 6, 2023 against Wofford that the Deacs had two or more players with at least 18 points.
Wake Forest forced the Cardinal (10-7, 2-4 ACC) into 17 turnovers and have now forced double-digit turnovers for the 58th time in the last 59 games, with the lone game coming against Syracuse on Jan. 11, 2024. The 59-game stretch goes back to January of 2022.
On the other end, the Deacs only turned the ball over eight times against the Cardinal, the fewest against an ACC opponent since Jan. 29, 2023 against Miami (also eight).
Freshman guard chipped in 11 points off the bench and went a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. For the season, Sørbye is 12-for-15 (.800) from the line which ranks second on the team (min. 10 attempts).
How It Happened
"We have continued to show a bunch of fight and battled back to get into it late. We lost this one in the first quarter. We had opportunities to score in the first quarter and didn't. It's a lesson learned that we can't just come out slow cause we won the rest of the game after the first quarter. We shot 94 percent from the line and 43 percent from three but just struggled in the paint. Elise led us in four categories and Raegyn had a career-high in threes and points scored. I am proud of our seniors. The seniors have to carry us down the stretch and they are showing up here late. No one can ever take that away from us and this kind of effort will end in wins here soon. Now we need to take this effort into practice this week. We need to be ready to go from the jump Sunday against a nationally-ranked team. We are at home and we have to come ready to go." - Megan Gebbia
