WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Behind yet another incredible game from sophomore guard Rylie Theuerkauf, the Wake Forest women's basketball team earned its first ACC win of the season as it defeated Boston College, 69-59, Sunday afternoon inside Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Theuerkauf set a new career-high in points for the second consecutive game as she finished with 21 on 8-of-16 shooting and a 4-for-4 mark from the charity stripe. She has 40 points over the last two games and now averages 10.3 on the season, the second-most on the team.

As a team, the Demon Deacons (8-12, 1-8 ACC) outscored the Eagles in points in the paint (34-18), points off turnovers (25-17) and on the fast break (10-7).

Additionally, Wake Forest won all four quarters of play. After taking the lead less than a minute into the game, Wake Forest held the lead for the remainder of the game, leading for 39:10 of the 40 minutes.

Defensively, Wake Forest held Boston College to its fourth-fewest points in a game this season, second-fewest in ACC play and well under its season-average of 73.6 heading into the game. Of note, the Deacs forced the Eagles into 20 turnovers, the seventh time this season Wake Forest forced at least 20 and fourth time against an ACC opponent.

Redshirt junior forward Malaya Cowles tied a career-high with five steals against the Eagles and added 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting and three blocks for an efficient all-around performance.

Cowles became the first Demon Deacon since Amber Cambell on Dec. 9, 2017 to record five or more steals and three or more blocks in a single game. Additionally, she was the first Wake Forest player to do so in an ACC game since Asia Williams against Georgia Tech on Jan. 31, 2013.

From Gebbia
"This is a great win. We kept the lead from start to finish. We had four in double figures including a career-high from Rylie. We held them to 34 percent from the field and everyone did their job from the starters to the bench. We need to finish the game a little better at the end. We made our free throws at the end which was crucial. Everyone stepped up in different ways. We forced them to turn it over a lot and scored a bunch off those turnovers which was huge in this one. Defensively, we really played good scout defense and Malaya played well on that end of the floor with three charges, three blocks and five steals. I was really proud how we handled ourselves today. We need to keep this going into Thursday against a really good NC State team." - Megan Gebbia
