Wake Forest to Host No. 3 Stanford at Spry Stadium

This will mark the first-ever ACC clash between the two schools.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Searching for its highest-ranked win since 2020, the Wake Forest men's soccer team will welcome No. 3-ranked Stanford to Spry Stadium Saturday evening.
The match against the Cardinal is slated for 7 p.m. and will be shown live on ACCNX with live stats available here.
The first 150 students will receive a free Truist Wake Forest backpack at the gate.

- Wake Forest sits at No. 14 and No. 23 in the TopDrawerSoccer and College Soccer News polls, respectively.
- Since 2015, Muuss has led the Deacs to a stellar 69-25-18 record against conference opponents as they look for their first ACC win of the season.
- Also under Muuss, Wake Forest is 47-23-16 against ranked opponents as the Deacs search for a statement top-five win on Saturday night.
- A win over Stanford will mark the highest-ranked win for the Deacs since they defeated No. 3 Clemson at home, 2-0, on Oct. 30, 2020.
- It will also be the first top-10 win since Oct. 28, 2022 (No. 9 Louisville, 3-0) and first top-five win since Oct. 17, 2021 (No. 5 Pitt, 3-1).

Great Week for the Captain
- Highlighted by a first-career hat trick for senior Cooper Flax, the midfielder put together an incredible week on the pitch last week against Liberty and Clemson.
- Flax opened his account on the year against the Flames as he converted from the spot in the second and 16th minutes before completing the hat-trick in the 68th minute with a beautiful free kick from just outside the box to make it 6-0.
- This marked the 31st hat-trick in program history, the fourth under head coach Bobby Muuss and first since Roald Mitchell accomplished the feat against Furman on Sept. 4, 2023.
- The senior also added an assist on a goal in the 60th minute following his corner, making him the first Deac with seven points in a game since Mitchell did so against Winthrop on Sept. 6, 2022.
- Flax continued his scoring ways into Friday's ACC match. The midfielder converted from the penalty spot for the third time in two games with the opener in the 13th minute and is now 7-for-8 from the mark over the last two years.
- He then went on to record the first multi-assist game of his career.
- He finished his week with a stellar four goals and three assists over the two matches for 11 points.
The Hometown Kid
- Following his beautiful strike against Clemson on Friday, Tate Lorentz extended his team lead in goals (six) and points (15).
- Lorentz has been incredibly efficient with his shot selection as well, as he has scored his six goals on just 13 shots (46.2 percent).
- Two weeks ago, he recorded his first-career brace against UNCW as he leveled the match in the 13th minute before firing the Deacs in front with a penalty he won in the 53rd.
- Entering the Stanford match, Lorentz is fourth in conference in points and goals.
- Additionally, he is one of just three ACC players with six-or-more goals and three-or-more assists.
Series History
- This will mark the sixth all-time meeting between Wake Forest and Stanford, with the Cardinal holding a 4-0-1 advantage in the series.
- All five previous matchups have come since 1992, including four in Winston-Salem.
- The Demon Deacons are 0-4-0 at home against the Cardinal.
- Three of the five meetings have come in the NCAA Tournament, all coming in consecutive years from 2015-2017.
- In the 2016 NCAA College Cup semifinal, the teams played to a 0-0 draw through 110 minutes before Stanford advanced 5-4 on penalty kicks.
- The following year, the Cardinal earned a 2-0 victory in Winston-Salem in the quarterfinal round.
- Wake Forest also fell in overtime to Stanford in the 2015 quarterfinals (2-1) and dropped regular-season meetings in 1992 (3-1) and 1995 (1-0).
Scouting the Cardinal
- Stanford enters Saturday's top-five clash with a 9-1-1 overall record, including a 3-1-0 mark in ACC play so far in 2025.
- The Cardinal sit second in the conference standings after most recently defeating Boston College, 3-0, on Sept. 28.
- This weekend will mark their fifth true road match of the season, with the Cardinal posting a 2-1-1 record away from home compared to a perfect 7-0-0 at Cagan Stadium.
- Stanford's lone setback came in a 1-0 defeat at Louisville on Sept. 5, while they also drew at San Jose State, 2-2.
- The Cardinal are averaging 2.45 goals per game behind a balanced attack that has seen five different players record at least three goals this season
- Trevor Islam leads the team with five goals, while Zach Bohane and Alfonso Tenconi-Gradillas have each added four.
- In addition, Fletcher Bank and Jack Pymm have scored three goals apiece.
- Joshua Partal leads the team and is fifth-nationally in assists with six.
- As a team, the Cardinal rank top-five nationally in total goals (27) and shots per-game (18.82).
- Defensively, Stanford has conceded just 12 goals through 11 matches (1.09 per game) behind the play of starting goalkeeper Rowan Schnebly.
- Schnebly has played all but 13 minutes this season, posting a 9-1-1 record with a 1.11 goals-against average and .636 save percentage, along with two clean sheets.
Last Time Out (vs. Clemson)
- The Wake Forest men's soccer team dropped a home ACC contest to Clemson at Spry Stadium Friday night.
- Coming off of his first-career hat-trick on Monday night against Liberty, senior Cooper Flax continued his scoring ways into Friday's match. The midfielder converted from the penalty spot for the third time in two games with the opener in the 13th minute.
- After two quick goals from the visitors, in-form forward Tate Lorentz found an equalizer in the 25th minute with a beautiful strike from the edge of the box with assists from Flax and junior Ethan Subachan.
- The Tigers led once again in the 30th minute, but Wake Forest responded 10 minutes later by way of a headed goal from defender Daniel Krueger following a set piece on assists from Vlad Walent and Flax. It marked Krueger's second-career goal and first at Spry Stadium.
- The Tigers found the winner in the 72nd minute and went on to earn a 4-3 victory.
National Leader In Wins
- Named the fourth head coach in program history prior to the start of the 2015 season, Bobby Muuss' Demon Deacon squads have built on the longstanding and rich 45-year history of the program.
- Since 2015, Wake Forest's 157 total wins ranks No. 1 nationally, five more than any program and 11 more than any other ACC program. During that span, Wake Forest is also joined only by Indiana as the only Division I programs to have won at least 10 matches every season.
- Additionally, Wake Forest and Indiana are the only two programs of the 211 programs nationally to hold double-digit NCAA Tournament appearance streaks.
- Wake Forest also leads the nation in wins over the last quarter-century (362).

Looking Ahead
- After Saturday night's match, Wake Forest will hit the road for just the third time this season as it travels across the country for an ACC match against another ACC newcomer, Cal.
- The match against the Golden Bears is slated for 6 p.m. eastern and will be shown live on ACCNX.
- This will mark the first ACC clash between the two programs and the second meeting in three years as the two teams battled to a 1-1 draw in non-conference action in 2023 at Spry.
- It will be just the fifth meeting overall and second in California, with the only other instance coming in 2005, a 2-3 overtime loss for the Deacs in the NCAA tournament on Nov. 26.
