Deacs Continue Road Stretch with Contests at Virginia Tech and Virginia

Wake Forest is coming off its first ACC weekend sweep of the season.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest volleyball (13-14, 7-9 ACC) is primed for more out-of-state competition this weekend, entering the second part of its two-week road tilt with matchups at Virginia Tech and Virginia.

The Demon Deacons face the Hokies on Friday evening at 6 p.m. (Nov. 21) before visiting the Cavaliers on Sunday afternoon, with first serve set for 1 p.m.

The Friday and Sunday matches will stream on ACC Network Extra.

This past weekend, with road victories over Syracuse and Boston College, Wake Forest earned its first Atlantic Coast Conference weekend sweep this fall.

Paced by standout performances by its hitters and a defensive team effort, the Demon Deacons took control through the final three sets to earn a 3-1 victory over Syracuse.

The contest saw Rian Baker surpass 2,500 career assists, securing the feat in the first set. Baker has led the Deacs in season assists twice throughout her four years at Wake Forest, currently ranking seventh in all-time career assists within program history. Baker recorded a double-double on Friday, her fifth of the year – 24 assists and 10 digs.

Ryleigh Whitekettle made several key plays throughout the night, finishing with a season-high 17 kills that led Wake Forest. The right-side hitter also added four blocks on the defensive end.

Sadie Poeck was another standout on the right side, totaling the most single-match kills of her young career (14) on an outstanding .414 hitting clip. The Zionsville, Ind. native was also solid defensively, finishing with three blocks.

Patrycja Lagida posted 11 kills and 10 digs for her third double-double of the fall. Paige Crawford was effective on both sides of the ball as well, producing eight kills, 11 digs and three service aces.

Becca Bellows collected 25 assists and eight digs. Emma Farrell led all individuals with 17 digs. Sanaa Williams went 8-for-13 on attacks with only one error (.538) while chipping in two blocks.

Sunday, Nov. 16
Wake Forest 3, Boston College 1

Wake Forest finished its road trip on a victorious note during Sunday afternoon, defeating Boston College in a 3-1 decision.

Patrycja Lagida tallied 10 kills, 10 digs and three service aces. Paige Crawford was also a standout on both ends, finishing with a team-best 14 kills while also reaching a new career high in blocks (6).

Emma Farrell led all individuals with 18 digs. Kelis Hawkins made her presence felt at the net, totaling a match-high nine blocks. The middle blocker additionally went 5-of-7 on attacks with only one error (.571).

Rian Baker was close to a double-double with 19 assists and nine digs. Beca Bellows contributed 23 assists. Ryleigh Whitekettle chipped in eight kills and four blocks.

Double-Double Deacs
A pair of setters – Rian Baker and Becca Bellows – have tied for the lead in double-doubles (5) this year. Additionally, most recently, Patrycja Lagida strung two double-doubles in as many matches, happening during the team's wins at Syracuse and Boston College, as she has four for the fall. Bellows and Baker lead the roster in service aces (26 apiece), while Bellows is first in assists (530) and Baker is second (478). Lagida is second in both kills (246) and aces (25).

Emma Bump
Earlier this week, the Deacs' standout senior libero, Emma Farrell, moved back into the top three of the ACC leaders in overall digs (98) and digs per set (4.00). She produced 35 digs through her last eight sets played. For the year, Farrell has enjoyed five showings of 20-plus digs and 11 of 15 or more. She is the lone roster member to have ranked as a top-10 conference individual in any category throughout each of the last four seasons.

Scouting the Opposition
Virginia Tech is 11-16 overall with a 3-13 mark in league play. The Hokies rank fourth in the ACC in total service aces (159), good for a 1.66 per-set average that is tied for third. Camilla Brandalise and Isabella Mishler are seventh and eighth in aces (0.35/set) and hitting percentage (.357), respectively. Head coach Marci Byers is in her sixth season at the helm.

The Virginia Cavaliers hold an 11-15 overall record and are 4-12 against conference opponents. The team most recently defeated Duke on the road in four sets and will host NC State on Friday evening (Nov. 21). Reagan Ennist is a go-to hitter for Virginia, ranking fifth in kills (4.10/set) and seventh in points (4.40/set) among all league individuals within ACC play.
