WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – In the ACC opener, the Wake Forest women's basketball team secured a 57-56 victory against Georgia Tech Sunday afternoon inside Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The Demon Deacons (10-2, 1-0 ACC) won the season opener in ACC play for the first time since the 2020-21 season, the same season the Deacs made the NCAA Tournament.
The Deacs held the Yellowjackets (4-8, 0-1 ACC) to just 33.3 percent shooting from the field and 24.0 percent from three. Wake Forest came into the game ranking 11th nationally and first in the ACC, holding opponents to just 32.7 shooting from the field and also ranking 24th in scoring defense with just 53.8 points per game allowed.
On the offensive end, the Demon Deacons were led by three double-figure performances including a game-high tying 14 points from both sophomore guard Aurora Sørbye and sophomore forward Grace Oliver. Sørbye also finished a perfect 5-of-5 at the free throw line including sinking the game-winning free throws with 4.6 seconds remaining in the game.
As a team, the Deacs were nearly perfect at the charity stripe, shooting a season-best 90.9 percent (10-of-11 FT).
Freshman guard Milan Brown also totaled 10 points in the win while also leading the team with four steals to go along with three rebounds and three assists.
Wake Forest tallied 14 total assists on the night on 20 made baskets (70.0 percent). In 12 games this season, the Demon Deacons have totaled 205 assists on 302 field goals (67.9 percent) which would mark the highest percentage in the Megan Gebbia era.
How It Happened
"All that matters is we found a way to win. We came from behind late in the game, shot our free throws well and executed when we needed to. Any win in the ACC is one to celebrate. Milan and Aurora were great tonight especially at the top of the zone on defense. Aurora also made some great offensive plays and this was one of her better games in her career. It's not easy to play at this level and I am proud of this group especially with the way the last two games ended. We now need to immediately turn our focus to the next one as we prepare for a good Miami team here on Thursday. That starts with a good practice on Monday." - Megan Gebbia
