Deacs Look to Build Off ACC Opening Win Thursday Night

The Demon Deacons are looking to start 2-0 in ACC play for the first time since the 2012-13 season.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest women's basketball team will look to build off a win to begin ACC play when the Deacs host Miami Thursday night at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum with tipoff scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
The Demon Deacons (10-2, 1-0 ACC) are off to their best start in 15 years and are in search of their first 2-0 start in ACC play since the 2012-13 season. In the first 12 games, they have been propelled by 17.1 assists per game which ranks 35th in the country. The Deacs have had the emergence of sophomore forward Grace Oliver as she is averaging a team-high 13.1 points per game and also ranking in the top 20 nationally with 59.5 percent shooting from the floor. Going into Thursday, the Deacs ranked 12th nationally and first in the ACC, holding opponents to just 32.7 shooting from the field and also ranking 20th in scoring defense with just 54.0 points per game allowed while also ranking 28th with 29.9 defensive rebounds per game.
The Hurricanes (6-4, 0-1 ACC) are coming off an 87-61 ACC opening loss to NC State on Sunday. This will mark Miami's first true road game of the season and the Hurricanes are 2-2 in neutral contests this season. On the glass and offensively, the Canes are led by senior forward Ra Shaya Kyle who ranks second in the country with seven double-doubles this season. She ranks 22nd nationally with 10.5 rebounds per game including 7.8 defensive rebounds per game which ranks 14th in the country. As a team, the Hurricanes rank second in the ACC with 20.2 free throw attempts per game.
Tipoff for Thursday is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. (ET) at LJVM Coliseum.

Assists On Made Baskets
Wake Forest tallied 14 total assists on the night on 20 made baskets (70.0 percent). In 12 games this season, the Demon Deacons have totaled 205 assists on 302 field goals (67.9 percent) which would mark the highest percentage in the Megan Gebbia era.
The Deacs did an excellent job of moving the ball last season, as they assisted on 394 of 667 made baskets this season (59.1 pct.). This was the highest assist percentage in the Gebbia era and the assist percentage ranks in the top 70 percent in the nation according to HerHoopStats.
In 2023-24, the Deacs assisted 404 of 694 made field goals (58.2 percent).
Forcing Them Over
The Deacs forced the Yellowjackets into 17 turnovers on Sunday, and have forced 10 or more takeaways 79 times in the last 83 games, a stretch dating back to January of 2022.
Through 12 games, the Demon Deacons have forced 16.0 turnovers per game.
Owning the Paint
The Demon Deacons had another excellent game in the paint, with 24 points posted inside, matching Georgia Tech's 24.
Across 12 games, the Deacs have totaled 444 points in the paint (37.0 per game).
Sharpshooting Deacs
Wake Forest knocked down seven threes, with junior guard/forward Mary Carter leading the charge with three in the win over Georgia Tech. So far this season, the Deacs have knocked down 69 threes.
The Deacs finished the 2024-25 season knocking down 159 threes (5.5 3FGM per game). This included seven games with eight or more threes made.

- The Demon Deacons won the season opener in ACC play for the first time since the 2020-21 season, the same season the Deacs made the NCAA Tournament.
- The Deacs held the Yellowjackets to just 33.3 percent shooting from the field and 24.0 percent from three. Wake Forest came into the game ranking 11th nationally and first in the ACC, holding opponents to just 32.7 shooting from the field and also ranking 24th in scoring defense with just 53.8 points per game allowed.
- On the offensive end, the Demon Deacons were led by three double-figure performances including a game-high tying 14 points from both sophomore guard Aurora Sørbye and sophomore forward Grace Oliver. Sørbye also finished a perfect 5-of-5 at the free throw line including sinking the game-winning free throws with 4.6 seconds remaining in the game.

- The Demon Deacons led for 35:26 minutes of game time (89 percent) and led by as many as nine in the second quarter. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes were only in front for 1:44 (4 percent).
- Sophomore guard Rylie Theuerkauf led the charge for Wake Forest as she finished with 18 points on 7-of-14 from the floor in addition to a block and two steals on the other end. It marked her 10th-consecutive game scoring in double figures and 18th time doing so this season.
- Theuerkauf leads the team with 11.9 points per-game this campaign and averages an impressive 17.1 PPG over the last nine outings.
- The senior duo of forward Demeara Hinds and guard Elise Williams also chipped in double-digit points with 12 and 10, respectively. Hinds finished an efficient 5-of-9 from the floor and led the team with seven rebounds.
