Junior guard Myles Colvin hit a clutch three with 49 seconds remaining to help Wake Forest secure a win over Longwood.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Junior guard Myles Colvin hit the go-ahead three with just 49 seconds remaining in the contest, as the Wake Forest men's basketball team (9-3, 0-0 ACC) extended its winning streak to three games on Wednesday evening, defeating Longwood (6-7, 0-0 Big South) 71-68 at LJVM Coliseum.
Sophomore guard Juke Harris led the Demon Deacons with 19 points while going 11-of-14 from the free-throw line. The Salisbury, N.C., native also recorded a team-high eight rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Senior guard Nate Calmese finished the game with 12 points while making all but one of his six field-goal attempts. Meanwhile, Colvin added 11 points, five rebounds and a team-best three assists.
Senior forward Tre'Von Spillers recorded nine points, six rebounds, a block and a steal, while junior forward Cooper Schwieger notched six points and three rebounds in just under 17 minutes off the bench.
Defensively, the Deacs limited Longwood to just 35.5 percent from the field, including holding them to 9-of-34 (26.5 percent) during the second half. Additionally, Wake Forest forced 13 turnovers and totaled nine steals.
How It Happened
"We try really hard to play complementary offense and defense, and in the first half I thought our offense completely hurt our defense. We shot too many threes. We didn't put any pressure on the rim. When we did put pressure on the rim, we were 5-for-10 in the first half, and then only 6-for-11 at the rim in the second half. That's 11-for-21 at the rim. That's not good, and because we didn't play good complimentary offense, they got in transition. We had terrible matchups on defense. We had guards on bigs, and bigs on guards. That really messed us up in the half court. Our ball screen defense was not very impactful in the first half at the line of scrimmage, and then our low man was not aggressive trying to come up and get the ball. We weren't aggressive on the roller. We had some bad mojo at halftime."
"I thought in the second half, we were much more aggressive on defense, and more tough minded on offense. We got in the lane more and we didn't have many threes. Juke [Harris] drew nine fouls. At around under four minutes to go, we had the game around where we wanted it. Then, we come down and take a really bad shot on offense early in the possession, go down, get pancaked on the screen and give up a three. They then made another three and then we started missing free throws. It was a bad combination. I'm disappointed in the fact that we were not only outscored in the paint, but we also got outscored off turnovers and second chance points. Those are things that we have been pretty good at all year long. Now, it's better to win than lose. A lot of teams lose these kinds of games. We definitely need to play a hell of a lot better than what we did tonight to beat Vanderbilt on Sunday. But, when I go to bed tonight, it'll still be a win when we wake up in the morning. We'll take it, we'll learn from it, and then we'll move on." - head coach Steve Forbes
