Deacs Set to Finish Non-Conference Monday Against Gardner-Webb

The Demon Deacons are looking for their best non-conference record since the 2021-22 season.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest women's basketball team will look to finish the non-conference strong as they play host to Gardner-Webb on Monday for a 1:00 p.m. tipoff at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
 
The Demon Deacons (10-3, 1-1 ACC) are off to their best start in 15 years and are looking to match their most non-conference wins since the 2021-22 season. In the first 13 games, they have been propelled by 17.2 assists per game which ranks 36th in the country and second in the ACC. The Deacs have had the emergence of sophomore forward Grace Oliver as she is averaging a team-high 12.9 points per game and also ranking in the top 25 nationally with 58.7 percent shooting from the floor which also ranks second in the ACC. Going into Monday, the Deacs ranked 11th nationally and first in the ACC, holding opponents to just 33.3 shooting from the field and also ranking 37th in scoring defense with just 54.8 points per game allowed while also ranking 33rd with 29.2 defensive rebounds per game.
 
The Bulldogs (3-10, 0-0 Big South) only three wins this season have come at home as they have an 0-7 record in road games this season, losing those seven games by an average of 21.4 points. This includes an 87-51 loss at Virginia Tech on Nov. 13 in Blacksburg. The Bulldogs have active hands with their 9.8 steals per game ranking just outside of the top100 nationally and ranking fourth in the Big South. They will also look to get up threes on the offensive end as their 20.4 three-point attempts per game rank fourth in the conference. On the glass, junior forward Amira Ofunniyin has been one of the better players in the Big South at rebounding the basketball, ranking second in the conference with 91 total rebounds this season.
 
Tipoff for Monday is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. (ET) at LJVM Coliseum.

Defensive Deacs
Wake Forest has remained at the top of the defensive rankings well into the season, both nationally and in the ACC. Through 13 games, the Demon Deacons sit third in the conference, allowing 54.8 points per game and close behind the top teams. 
 
Additionally, the Deacs rank first in the ACC and 11th in the nation with a 33.3 field goal percentage defense.

Assists On Made Baskets
Wake Forest tallied 18 total assists on the night on 25 made baskets (72.0 percent). In 13 games this season, the Demon Deacons have totaled 223 assists on 327 field goals (68.2 percent) which would mark the highest percentage in the Megan Gebbia era.

The Deacs did an excellent job of moving the ball last season, as they assisted on 394 of 667 made baskets this season (59.1 pct.). This was the highest assist percentage in the Gebbia era and the assist percentage ranks in the top 70 percent in the nation according to HerHoopStats.

In 2023-24, the Deacs assisted 404 of 694 made field goals (58.2 percent). 

Forcing Them Over 
The Deacs forced the Hurricanes into 20 turnovers on Sunday, and have forced 10 or more takeaways 80 times in the last 84 games, a stretch dating back to January of 2022. 
 
Through 13 games, the Demon Deacons have forced 15.8 turnovers per game.
 
Owning the Paint
The Demon Deacons had another excellent game in the paint, with 32 points posted inside, while allowing Miami to score 28 points inside, a 4-point differential. 
 
Across 13 games, the Deacs have totaled 476 points in the paint (36.6 per game).
 
Sharpshooting Deacs 
Wake Forest knocked down five threes, with four different players accounting for the total Thursday against Miami. So far this season, the Deacs have knocked down 74 threes.
 
The Deacs finished the 2024-25 season knocking down 159 threes (5.5 3FGM per game). This included seven games with eight or more threes made. 
 
Through the first three seasons under head coach Megan Gebbia, the Demon Deacons have hit 590 threes in 95 games under her direction (6.2 3FGM per game).

  • The Hurricanes only four losses this season have come to teams either in the top 25 or receiving votes as the Demon Deacons forced the Canes into 18 turnovers which resulted in 18 points on the other end of the floor.
  • The Deacs also held Miami without a free throw until the fourth quarter and forced Hurricane leading scorer Ra Shaya Kyle to a season-low five points. Additionally, it was her fewest points scored since Jan. 9, 2025 against No. 15 Kentucky.
  • The game was tight the entire way as neither team had a lead bigger than eight points in the game. With Miami leading by seven with just 33 seconds remaining in the game (63-56), the Deacs mounted one last run and had a shot to tie the game as time expired.
  • Four Wake Forest players finished in double figures as junior guard/forward Mary Carter spearheaded the Demon Deacon offense with a team-high 13 points. Carter went 5-of-10 from the field and totaled six rebounds.
  • Sophomore guard Aurora Sørbye had another strong outing, finishing with a game-high seven assists to go along with 10 points. Through two ACC games, she has 11 assists to just one turnover.

  • In addition to Sørbye's career-best performance, the Deacs had three players finish in double-figures as redshirt junior Malaya Cowles and senior guard Reagyn Conley dropped 14 and 12 points, respectively.
  • Sørbye and Cowles finished an incredibly efficient 13-of-16 from the floor and the freshman knocked down 3-of-4 of her attempts from beyond-the-arc. Cowles also hauled in a team-best eight rebounds and grabbed three steals.
  • Conley's 12 points set a new season-high and connected on three triples for the third time this season.
