
Demon Deacons Look to Continue Hot Start with Trip to Marshall

The Deacs will take on the Thundering Herd on Sunday, with first serve scheduled for 11 a.m.
HUNTINGTON, W.V. – The Wake Forest women's tennis team will look to continue their hot start to the 2025 season on Sunday as they head up to Huntington, West Virginia to take on Marshall.
Sunday's match will be the first time that the Demon Deacons and the Thundering Herd will square off since the 2001-02 season and is the first meeting at Marshall in the all-time series.
First serve is slated for 11 a.m. with all matches being live streamed online. Live results will also be updated here.

Versus Marshall
Last Time Out
The Demon Deacons swept their doubleheader against Old Dominion and Elon this past Sunday, defeating the Monarchs 4-2 before sweeping the Phoenix 7-0.
The wins over Old Dominion and Elon gave head coach Jeff Wyshner his 191st and 192nd career victories as the head coach of Wake Forest, making him the winningest head coach in women's tennis program history.
In their matchup with the Monarchs, the Demon Deacons swept doubles play with wins from the team of graduate student Anna Zhang and junior Whitley Pate, and the duo of junior Nevena Carton and freshman Kady Tannenbaum.
After falling behind to ODU after the first two results in singles play, Carton and Tannenbaum both picked up wins at first and fourth singles to reclaim the lead. Freshman Brianna Baldi secured the win for the Deacs at fifth singles after battling back from a first set loss to defeat Marina Markina (6-7 (6-7), 6-0, 6-3) in three sets.
The Deacs then proceeded to sweep Elon in their second match of the day, highlighted by Pate's victory against Heidi Bulger (6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6) at third singles to clinch the sweep.
Off to a Hot Start
After dropping their opening match of the season to No. 18 Tennessee, the Demon Deacons have won five-straight contests. The team's 5-1 start is their best start to a season since the shortened 2020 season, where the Deacs started the season 9-1.
During their first six matches, the Demon Deacons are a combined 37-7 across singles and doubles matches, including 12-0 in doubles matches. The doubles teams of Zhang/Pate and No. 44 Carton/Tannenbaum are both 5-0 in dual matches this season, while Blanch and graduate student Makayla Mills are 2-0 as a duo.
In singles action, the Demon Deacons are a combined 25-7 this season, led by Tannenbaum and fellow freshman Brianna Baldi, who both sit at 5-1. Carton and sophomore Sankavi Gownder have also been dominant in singles matches as both hold a 4-1 record in their respective positions. Finally, Pate and redshirt sophomore Krystal Blanch round out the top of the Demon Deacon lineup with a 3-1 record each.
Win No. 192 and Counting
With Sunday's wins over Old Dominion and Elon, head coach Jeff Wyshner recorded his 191st and 192nd career win as the head coach of the Demon Deacons, setting the record for the most career wins as a head coach in program history.
Under Wyshner's leadership, the Demon Deacons have amassed a 192-180 overall record and have made eight-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. Wyshner has also helped produce three All-Americans during his 15-year tenure, including Singles All-American Carolyn Campana (2021), and Doubles All-Americans MC Meredith and Eliza Omiru (2020) and Anna Brylin and Brooke Killingsworth (2022).
Scouting the Opposition
The Thundering Herd head into Sunday with a 4-0 record, having defeated Cleveland State (4-3), Youngstown State (4-3), Eastern Kentucky (6-1), and Belarmine (6-1).
Through their first four matches of the season, Marshall is a combined 25-9 in singles and doubles play, including a 9-1 record in doubles and 16-8 record in singles. Leading the way for the Thundering Herd is senior Sophia Hurrion, who is 4-0 this season at the fourth singles spot and 3-0 in doubles matches.
Three other players are currently 3-1 in singles matches for Marshall, including freshmen Van Nel Hout and Alina Mokrynskaya, as well as junior and former Sun Belt Freshman of the Year and two-time All-Sun Belt First Team Singles and Doubles Player Johanna Strom. Strom and Hout are also 2-0 this season as a duo, while Mokrynskaya leads the team at 4-0 in doubles play.
Marshall has been dominant at home over the past two seasons, going a combined 13-1 and are currently on a 13-match home winning streak, with their last loss coming on Jan. 27, 2024 against West Virginia. During their home match winning streak, the Thundering Herd have defeated two ACC opponents in Virginia Tech and Louisville.

The Demon Deacons will be back in action next weekend at they return home to the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center to take on Furman and James Madison.
The match against Furman will be on Friday, with first serve scheduled for 4 p.m. The Deacs will then face James Madison on Sunday at 12 p.m. to close out the weekend. Admission for both matches is free for all spectators.
