Two top-ten finishes helped the Deacs to finish in a top spot.
MELBOURNE, Fla. - The Wake Forest women's golf team finished second and ahead of multiple national powers after three rounds of play at Suntree Country Club at the annual Moon Golf Invitational, hosted by the University of Louisville.
On the final day of the competition, the Deacs shot their best round, finishing five under to propel themselves past No. 4 South Carolina and surpass last year's fifth-place finish. The Deacons excelled on par-four scoring and ended second only behind the winner, No.7 Florida State.
After a stellar second round, den Dunnen finished the weekend two under par and recorded 13 birdies, the most on the team and second most of the competition. This marks the first top-five finish of the season for the junior.
Senior Carolina Chacarra shot her best round on day two, with a blemish-free scorecard and two birdies on the day. The Spain native finished her weekend with 42 pars, tied third overall and helped her finish T14.
With three birdies to begin her day, grad transfer Sky Sload climbed 26 spots from the previous round and tied freshman Chloe Kovelesky to earn the team's lowest scores of the day at three under par. In her first team competition as a Deac, Kovelesky finished sixth overall and five strokes above her score from round one.
Although she began her tournament on the back end of the scoring, sophomore Macy Pate capitalized on round three and moved 11 spots from day two. Tuesday's finish saw Pate with her best round of the week with an even slate on the front nine and two birdies on the back nine.
Coach's Comments
"It was a great finish in our first tournament of the spring. The course was tough and windy and so to play the last two days -8 as a team shows the talent and depth of this Deac team. Anne-Sterre had a top 5 finish and our new addition this spring semester Chloe Kovelesky had an impressive finish today and adds to this already talented team. " - head coach Kim Lewellen
