Deacs Knock Off No. 22 California and North Carolina Wesleyan in Sunday Doubleheader Sweep

3/2/2025 7:23:00 PM | Men's Tennis

Wake Forest is now 13-0 at home this season.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 1-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team (19-0, 2-0 ACC) continued its winning ways in a home doubleheader on Sunday (March 2). The Demon Deacons first defeated No. 22 California (7-2, 0-2 ACC) in a 4-1 victory before taking down North Carolina Wesleyan (0-2, 0-0 USA South), 7-0, to finish the evening.

Sunday featured Wake Forest's first-ever matchup with California. The team's win over No. 6 Stanford on Friday (Feb. 28) secured a regular-season sweep over the league's West Coast newcomers.

The Deacs also moved to 4-0 all-time versus North Carolina Wesleyan, holding their first meeting since April 17, 2022.

Graduate student Ioannis Xilas has piled in a team-leading 10 singles wins through the spring. Junior DK Suresh Ekambaram moved to 8-3 on the season and is still undefeated when competing in first singles, now standing at 4-0. Xilas, Suresh Ekambaram and sophomore Luca Pow all earned ranked victories in singles during the California matchup.

Wake Forest remains perfect in winning the doubles point this year, now having done so in each of its 19 appearances. The team is also a combined 70-22 in singles and 39-7 in doubles so far this spring.

The Deacs are 13-0 at home this season and 31-1 dating back to the start of the 2024 spring campaign.

From Coach Bresky
"We were very excited to get another ACC home win this afternoon – Cal has an excellent team. We did a good job adjusting from outdoors to indoors, battling through the challenges and adversity that often comes with that. It was good to get another match in later today so that some of our guys could see additional time. We did well with the sweep, and I felt those guys made the most of their action, as they will continue to help all of us moving forward. We're happy with today's results and looking forward to next weekend on the road." - head coach Tony Bresky

Next Up
Wake Forest will compete out of state this upcoming week, visiting Virginia Tech on Friday afternoon (March 7) before facing No. 5 Virginia for a Sunday showing.
