No. 16 Wake Forest Falls in Series Finale

The Demon Deacons travel to Kannapolis on Tuesday, April 1 for a 7 p.m. ET first pitch against High Point.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Despite a great start from sophomore Blake Morningstar on the mound, the No. 16 Wake Forest baseball team was unable to hold onto a late lead, as the Demon Deacons fell, 6-5, in the final game of the series against Virginia Tech on Sunday evening at David F. Couch Ballpark.

Morningstar had the best outing of his career, collecting a career-high 10 strikeouts over a career-long 7.0 innings. The righty retired 10-straight Hokies over innings three through six and allowed just two runs on five hits.

Wake Forest scored all five of its runs with two outs in the contest, with a run in the fourth and a pair of two-out runs in both the seventh and ninth innings.

Sophomore Antonio Morales roped the second triple of his career to tie the game in the seventh, roping a 1-2 pitch that rolled all the way to the wall in right center to plate second baseman Dalton Wentz from first base.

Pinch hitter Luke Costello came up clutch, placing the fourth pitch of his at-bat through the left side to bring in Morales and give Wake Forest the lead.

After three runs from Virginia Tech in the top of the ninth, right fielder Matt Scannell put the tying run 90 feet away on a two-out, two-RBI triple, but the Demon Deacons were unable to bring him in.

Designated hitter Kade Lewis extended his hit streak to 18-straight games with a base hit in the eighth inning.

FROM COACH WALTER
"It's a bad loss. I've got to make better decisions there at the end of the game to give ourselves a better chance to win with our pitching decisions. So, that loss is on me. I thought our guys did a great job of battling late in the game with our two-out hitting. [Luke] Costello came off the bench with a big hit. There in the ninth inning [Matt] Scannell, [Cam Nelson] and [Antonio Morales] gave us a chance. It's a disappointing weekend and we've got to bounce back and get ready for Tuesday. High Point is playing great baseball and we're going to need to play well on Tuesday." - Head Coach Tom Walter
