Freshmen Lead Wake Forest Over High Point in Kannapolis

4/1/2025 11:01:00 PM | Baseball

Starting pitcher Chris Levonas tossed 5.0 scoreless innings, and Wake’s freshmen hitters had seven of the Deacs’ 12 RBI.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Behind five dominant innings from freshman righty Chris Levonas, the Wake Forest baseball team earned a 13-1 victory over High Point at Atrium Health Ballpark in Kannapolis, N.C. Tuesday evening.

Levonas recorded his second-consecutive scoreless outing and doubled his previous season-high with 10 strikeouts to just one hit and two walks. For the season, the Holmdel, N.J., native has allowed just three runs across 13.1 innings (2.03 ERA) with 21 strikeouts.

Wake Forest (21-9, 7-5 ACC) utilized seven different pitchers out of the bullpen, as they combined to allow just one run and two hits along with eight strikeouts.

Offensively, four Demon Deacons recorded multiple runs batted in, including three apiece from freshmen Dalton Wentz and Matt Conte in the eight and nine holes, respectively. Sophomore Cam Nelson also added three hits and three RBI in the leadoff spot.

The Deacs also showed patience at the plate with 10 separate Demon Deacons earning a free pass against the Panthers with 11 total.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Starting pitcher Chris Levonas struck out a pair in a three-up, three-down top of the first.
  • Working around a pair of walks, Levonas picked up two more strikeouts in the second.
  • The Deacs put a runner in scoring position with two away in the bottom of the second, but were unable to strike first.
  • Levonas struck out the side to bring his total to seven through three innings.
  • A pair of miscues in the third from the High Point defense put Wake up, 1-0.
  • Retiring five-straight hitters via the punchout, Levonas ran his strikeout total to nine through his first four innings of work.
  • After a pair of walks put two on base with one away, catcher Matt Conte came through with a two-RBI double down the line in left to help the Demon Deacons grab a 3-0 advantage.
  • A popout, sac bunt and his 10th strikeout of the evening rounded out the scoreless 5.0 inning start for Levonas.
  • Wake Forest doubled its lead to 6-0 with three runs in the fifth, all driven in by freshmen.
    • Back-to-back walks to Jack Winnay and Javar Williams put a pair of runners on with no outs.
    • Freshman Luke Costello roped a double of his own down the line in left to plate Winnay and push the lead to four.
    • Second baseman Dalton Wentz lifted a sac fly to left field to drive in Williams.
    • Conte capped the scoring with his third RBI of the night on a single to center field.
  • Reliever Haiden Leffew worked a scoreless sixth inning to keep High Point off the board.
  • The Demon Deacons blew the game open with five two-out runs in the sixth to take an 11-0 lead.
    • Williams singled through the right side to start the two-out rally.
    • Costello drew a four-pitch walk to put two on.
    • Wentz doubled to left center, plating Williams to extend the Wake Forest lead.
    • Conte walked on five pitches to load the bases full of Deacs.
    • Center fielder Cam Nelson roped a double to right center to drive in a pair of runs and push the lead to 9-0.
    • Graduate transfer Matt Scannell capped the big inning with a single through the left side on the first pitch of his at-bat to move the score to 11-0 in favor of the Demon Deacons.
  • Relievers Logan Lunceford and Nate Brittain combined to keep the Panthers at bay in the seventh.
  • The Deacs scored for the fifth-straight inning with two runs in the seventh.
    • Wentz's second hit of the night on a single to left drove in Wake's 12th run of the game.
    • Nelson's third hit and third RBI from the leadoff spot drove the lead to 13-0.
  • High Point got on the board with a run in the top of the eighth.
    • Freshman Rhys Bowie entered with the bases loaded and nobody out, recording all three outs via the punchout to limit the damage.
  • Wake Forest officially closed the door in the ninth inning to secure a 13-1 victory, the Deacs' 21st of the campaign.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT
  • Freshman Chris Levonas dazzled in his fifth start of the season, allowing just one hit over 5.0 scoreless innings.
    •  The righty doubled his previous season high with 10 strikeouts in the contest.
      • Levonas struck out six-straight batters over innings two through four, keeping High Point out of the hit column over his first 4.1 innings of work.
    • During his last two starts at Elon and against the Panthers, Levonas has allowed just two hits over 9.0 innings with 15 punchouts.
    • Levonas lowered his ERA to 2.05 on the year, as the second-round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers continues to shine as a Demon Deacon.

STAGGERING STATISTIC
  • Wake Forest struck out 18 hitters on Tuesday night, marking the second-most punchouts in a game this season by the Deacs.
    • The Demon Deacons have struck out 10 or more batters 21 times through the first 30 games of the 2025 season.

FROM COACH WALTER
"Our freshman had a big day today. I mean it started with Chris Levonas on the mound. He set the tone and was throwing up zeros. I thought he had all four pitches working today. I was really happy with his outing. Our young Buck got it done.  Matt Conte had a big day today with the big double down the line to break it open there and get us to 3-0.  Dalton Wentz had a couple of big knocks. Luke Costello had a big double down the line. Sophomore Cam Nelson had a big day from the leadoff spot. He was on base all day and I thought he had really great at-bats. Those four guys really carried us offensively. I thought everybody threw the ball well today. I was really happy with Rhys Bowie coming in there in a tough spot with the bases loaded and doing what he did. It was good to see [Josh Gunther] back out there, and Matt Bedford got some work. I thought it was a good day overall." - Head Coach Tom Walter
