Demon Deacons Drop Saturday Clash at No. 16 North Carolina

4/12/2025 4:49:00 PM | Baseball

The series finale is scheduled for 1 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Wake Forest baseball team dropped the second game of the series, 17-1, in seven innings to No. 16 North Carolina Saturday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium.

Second baseman Dalton Wentz homered for the fourth time in the last six games with his solo blast in the top of the fourth. Wentz leads the team with 16 multi-hit efforts in his first year as a Demon Deacon (24-12, 9-8 ACC).

Sophomore Cam Nelson doubled in the third inning for his fifth extra-base hit in the last seven games.

Third baseman Kade Lewis extended his hit streak to six-straight games with a single in the top of the sixth inning and has now hit safely in 24 of the last 25 games for Wake Forest.

Reliever Rhys Bowie retired all five North Carolina (27-8, 10-7 ACC) batters he faced with a strikeout for the second-longest outing of his freshman season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • North Carolina took a 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning.
  • The Demon Deacons put runners on the basepaths but could not cut into the lead in the top of the second.
    • Freshman Dalton Wentz recorded Wake Forest's first hit of the game on a single out into left center.
  • The Tar Heels made it 5-0 in the bottom of the second inning.
  • Wake Forest put a runner in scoring position once again following a double by sophomore Cam Nelson, but were unable to score in the top of the third.
  • North Carolina extended their lead to 8-0 after three innings.
  • Wentz launched a solo home run over the right field wall to put the Deacs on the board in the top of the fourth.
  • The Har Heels plated five more in the bottom half of the fourth to make it 13-1.
  • Freshman Rhys Bowie worked a scoreless bottom of the fifth.
  • Carolina extended their lead to 17-1 after six innings.
  • Wake Forest fell, 17-1.

FROM COACH WALTER
"It's two days of us just not putting any pressure on [North Carolina] to perform. They've been on a free roll for two days.
We haven't made good pitches. We haven't pitched ahead. We haven't had great at-bats. We haven't done anything outside of the first inning yesterday, and we haven't really strung anything together where we stacked at-bats and grinded.

We've got Blake Morningstar going tomorrow. He's our best guy, and we've got a rested bullpen. We've got to come out tomorrow and find a way to win and salvage a game in this series. It's a big game for us tomorrow. It'll test our character. As I told our guys after the game, your character is tested at your lowest moments. This is the low point of our season for us, and we need to come out tomorrow and play well.
" - Head Coach Tom Walter
