The Walter GameChanger Scholarship recipient will be awarded at the event.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Hosted by Get In The Game, KEDDfest will take place Wednesday, April 16th, 2025, starting at 10:30 a.m. ET at the David F. Couch Ballpark.
The goal of KEDDfest 2025 is not only for our students to introduce their service projects to the community but also to broaden awareness on the importance of engaging in essential conversations about racial equity and inclusion.
Youth will be bused in from Mt. Tabor High School to the event. Attendees will rotate between five "camps" throughout the day which include: College Camp, Fun Camp, GITG Camp, Hope Camp, and a Wellness Camp.
Head Coach Tom Walter gets the day started with an opening presentation, joined by Cory Holt and Dwight Davis.
During the camps, students will engage in a full day of interactive activities, including the AR/VR station "Traveling While Black," as well as diverse conversations and presentations pertinent to the acknowledgment of equity and inclusion in our communities.
At the heart of Get in the Game is the idea that while we have many things that make us unique, at our core we are all people with unimaginable potential. It is when we take the time to learn about each other, we are at our strongest and able to take on the toughest challenges.
Get In the Game grew out of a single act of kindness when two men of different backgrounds—a young, black student from a small town and a white coach of an elite college baseball team—came together to save a life. It was that act of kindness that inspired the Walter GameChanger Scholarship, which honors GameChangers who have shown an extraordinary commitment to creating a more equitable world and truly exemplify the values of KEDD (Kindness, Empathy, Dignity, and Diversity) in all aspects of their lives.
For many, one of the biggest GameChangers of all is the opportunity to pursue higher education such as a two or four-year degree from a college, university, or vocational school. In celebration of the outstanding GameChangers who have gone above and beyond in their commitment to Get In the Game, the Walter GameChanger Scholarship will award one (1) $5,000 scholarship in 2025. The funds will be paid directly to the institution of the recipient's choice and can be used for tuition, books, fees, or room and board.
The scholarship winner will be announced at the conclusion of KEDDfest on Wednesday afternoon.
Get in the Game is a registered 501c3 nonprofit organization that has been in business since the summer of 2020. The organization has worked in 15 different schools across Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Washington DC, Cleveland and Baltimore and has had more than 1,200 students (GameChangers) come through the program. These students take what they learn in facilitated conversations/curriculum around race and social equity and perform a community service project (called KEDD projects, which stands for Kindness, Empathy, Dignity and Diversity) that benefits an underserved population. We celebrate these GameChangers everywhere at our annual KEDDfest event.
