Wake Forest Begins ACC Tournament Action Against SMU

The Deacs will take on the Mustangs for the first time this season during the second round of the 2025 ACC Women’s Tennis Championships on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m.

CARY, N.C. – After earning the No. 14 seed in the 2025 ACC Women's Tennis Championships, the Wake Forest women's tennis team is set to open postseason play on Wednesday afternoon against No. 11-seeded SMU at the Cary Tennis Park, with first serve scheduled for 12:30 p.m.

This will be the first meeting between the Demon Deacon (14-12, 3-9 ACC) and the Mustangs (12-13, 4-8 ACC) this season, as well as the first matchup between the two programs since the Deacs defeated the Mustangs during the shortened 2020 season.

Wednesday's match will be available for live stream through the ACC website, while live results will be updated throughout the day here.

The winner of the match between Wake Forest and SMU will go on to face No. 6 seed Notre Dame on Thursday at 12:30 p.m.

2025 ACC Championships
Single day tickets are priced at $15 for adults, and $10 for youth ages 17 and under and non-ACC college students. Admission is free for children ages nine and under. ACC college students get in free with a valid school ID. A full championship pass for all five days of the tournament is priced at $30. All seating for the tournament is General Admission.

Last Time Out
The Demon Deacons closed out its regular season with a pair of home matches against No. 29 Stanford and No. 18 California.

The Deacs fell to Stanford at the Indoor Tennis Center on Friday afternoon, 4-0. Wake Forest picked up one victory during the match, with graduate student Makayla Mills and junior Jingyi Li defeating Okpara/Shaffer at third doubles, 6-3. Sophomore Sankavi Gownder came the closest to earning a point against the Cardinal, having forced a third set at fifth singles before seeing her match against Alexandra Yepifanova go unfinished (6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 3-0).

The Demon Deacons would end its regular season with a 4-1 loss to California on Sunday afternoon. Graduate student Anna Zhang secured the lone point for the Deacs, defeating No. 38 Jessica Alsola at second singles, 6-3, 6-0. The win over Alsola marked Zhang's first ranked-win of the season and her first victory at second singles for the Deacs.

Wake Forest finished the regular season ranked at No. 41 in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll. The Demon Deacons are currently one of 11 ACC schools ranked inside the top-50.

Meanwhile, junior Nevena Carton is ranked in both the singles and doubles polls, sitting at No. 82 in singles and at No. 88 in doubles alongside freshman Kady Tannenbaum.

Scouting the Opposition
SMU finished the regular season with an upset victory over No. 28 Georgia Tech this past weekend to move to No. 48 in the most recent ITA poll. Overall, the Mustangs ended the spring with a 12-13 record, including a 4-8 mark in ACC play.

SMU has only one ranked doubles team inside the latest ITA rankings, with senior Ellie Pittman and freshman Sophie Llewellyn leading the way at No. 58. The duo are 11-5 following the regular season, including posting a 7-3 mark in their last 10 matches. The pair are also 3-2 against nationally ranked doubles teams and 1-1 against top-50 opponents.

The winner of Wednesday's match between the Demon Deacons and the Mustangs will advance to the third round of the 2025 ACC Tournament and face off against the No. 6-seeded Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Thursday at 12:30 p.m.
