Todd Garvey Named Volleyball Assistant Coach

The veteran coach is the third staff member to join the Demon Deacons this spring.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest head volleyball coach Jeff Hulsmeyer announced the addition of Todd Garvey to his coaching staff on Monday. Garvey will join the Demon Deacons' staff in the role of an assistant coach.
"I am so pleased to have Todd Garvey join our staff to fill our final open position," said Hulsmeyer. "He has been a successful Division I head coach at Jacksonville State, has competed in the NCAA Tournament while at Purdue, and has served on the staff at Ohio University. Although we will utilize Todd's experience in several areas of the program, he will focus on working with our pin hitters and serving as our training and technical coordinator. As a Louisville native, I've known Todd, who comes from a family of coaches, and I have followed his coaching career over the years. I am so excited to work with him and bring him to Wake Forest."

With over a decade of coaching experience at the collegiate level, Garvey comes to Winston-Salem following a year spent at Liberty University, where he served as the Flames' defensive coordinator, lead recruiter and lead scouting assistant. He worked with several different player positions, including Liberty's outside hitters, middle blockers and defensive specialists. Additional duties involved planning for practices and matches, along with assisting at summer camps.
Garvey led Jacksonville State's volleyball program for a five-year stretch from 2018-23, piecing a 103-39 overall record for a .725 win percentage that ranked in the top 25 nationally among Division I coaches. He won 20-plus matches in three of his five seasons at JSU and coached 18 combined all-conference selections through the Ohio Valley Conference and Atlantic Sun Conference. Garvey and the Gamecocks won the OVC regular-season championship in back-to-back years during 2019-20, as he was additionally named the OVC Coach of the Year in 2019. Jacksonville State finished within the top three of the conference in each season with Garvey at the helm.

Prior to his time at Jacksonville State, Garvey worked in assistant roles for Lipscomb's volleyball team during the 2017 and 2018 fall seasons. He mainly performed recruiting duties, served as the offensive coordinator during matches, scouted opponents, organized team travel and ran summer camps. Garvey also played a part in developing standout players Carlyle Nusbaum and Brittany Thomas to be named to the collegiate national teams in summer 2017. Lipscomb finished fourth in the Atlantic Sun by the conclusion of the 2018 campaign while ranking in the RPI's top 80.
The 2016-17 school year saw Garvey act as the top assistant coach at Ohio University, helping the program to a 12-4 conference record and third-place finish in the Mid-American Conference. Working with the team's setters and other positions, Garvey mentored sophomore setter Stephanie Olman, who ultimately led the MAC in assists-per-set average (11.35), and all-conference outside hitters Mal Salis and Jaime Kosiorek.
Garvey got his start at the collegiate level as a volunteer assistant coach at Purdue for the 2015-16 campaign. The Boilermakers reached the second round of the 2015 NCAA Tournament and ranked 17th nationally by the season's end. Garvey coached two-time Olympic medalist Annie Drews, who went on to be tabbed MVP of the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics while winning gold with the national team.
From 2007-14, Garvey was head coach of the volleyball program at Mercy Academy in Louisville, Ky. Managing all aspects, he paced the Jaguars to emerge as one of the nation's top teams. Posting a 320-41 overall record through eight seasons, Mercy ranked as a top-20 team in the country on six separate occasions, along with being No. 1 in the state of Kentucky as state champions for the 2008, 2009 and 2014 seasons. Garvey notched 30 or more wins each year, including 40 twice. In his final year, Mercy went 40-1 en route to being named national champions.

A Louisville native, Garvey attended the University of Louisville, graduating with a B.A in Exercise Physiology, Sport Administration in January 2003. He competed as a USA Volleyball player from 1999-2008.
From 2018-21, Garvey served on the AVCA head coaches national rankings committee.
