No. 17 Wake Forest Primed for Ivy League Matchup

The Deacs are returning to Spry following a 2-0 shutout on the road.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Searching for a fifth-consecutive clean sheet at home, the No. 17 Wake Forest women's soccer team is set for a noon matchup against the Brown Bears on Sunday, Sept. 7 for the annual We Are Wake Green Game at Spry Stadium. 

The contest is scheduled to begin at noon and will be streamed live on ACCNX with live stats available here.

Parking is encouraged in lots A, B, Q, W1 & W2. A complete parking map of campus is here. Gates open one hour prior to kickoff for all home matches. Sunday will serve as the program's We Are Wake match, as Demon Deacon student-athletes will wear special green warm-up shirts and staff will wear green ribbons for the contest.

2025 Wake Forest soccer season and single game tickets are on-sale now giving fans the opportunity to witness The Best Fan Experience In North Carolina from a number of unique seating options!

Adult season tickets start as low as $70 for general admission and $50 for youth while reserved chairbacks are $130 for fans and $110 for Wake Forest University faculty and staff. 

Fans can catch all of Demon Deacon home action this fall as well by purchasing combo season tickets to see both men's and women's soccer starting as low as $90 for general admission and $180 for reserved chairbacks for fans and $150 for Wake Forest University faculty and staff.

Last Time Out
  • Charleston registered the first shot of the contest in the ninth minute, but Amaral covered the zone to keep the contest even. 
  • The Cougars were awarded a free kick in the 14th minute, but a header from redshirt sophomore Sierra Sythe cleared the ball and kept the Cougars scoreless.
  • Just seconds after entering the match, sophomore Chloe Burst recorded the Deacs' first shot of the night in the 31st minute. 
  • The Cougs recorded their second shot in the 34th minute but sent it wide of the net. 
  • Freshman Kylie Maxwell saw her first shot attempt of the night off a corner just before the half.
  • The two sides went into the break deadlocked at 0-0.
    • Amaral finished the first 45 with three saves.
  • Wake Forest broke through the Charleston keeper less than three minutes into the second half. 
    • Sophomore Lola Ressler directed the ball to the front of the zone and for Burst to tap in and give the Deacons the 1-0 lead.
    • This is Burst's first goal of her career and Ressler's first assist of her career.
  • In the 65th minute, Amaral recorded her fourth save of the night to maintain the one-goal lead.
  • The Deacons struck again in the 75th minute, as freshman Allie Flanagan buried a shot deep to put Wake Forest up 2-0.
    • With the tally, she became the third Demon Deacon with multiple goals in 2025 alongside Maxwell and redshirt-sophomore defender Sierra Sythe.
  • The Deacs saw a stellar scoring opportunity as multiple Deacons attempted to bury the ball, but the Cougars scrambled to clear it in the 82nd minute. 
  • Charleston drove in one final shot with two seconds of the clock however, Amaral responded to secure the 2-0 victory.
    • The Oviedo, Fla. native tied a career-high with six saves on the night. She leads the ACC with five shutouts and sits second with a .905 save percentage.
  • Freshman Rachael Wright made her first career start. 
  • Sophomore Chloe Burst recorded her first career goal in her tenth career appearance. 
    • Sophomore Lola Ressler recorded her first career assist on Burst's goal.
  • Junior Sammi Wiemann made her first career appearance in the 88th minute. 

Quick Hitters
  • The Demon Deacons currently rank 17th on the United Soccer Coaches Poll and 24th on TopDrawerSoccer. 
  • Wake Forest wrapped the 2024 year with a 16-4-1 record, highlighted by a 9-1-1 home record at Spry Stadium. 
  • Spry has almost guaranteed results for the Demon Deacons over the last three seasons, as Wake Forest has posted a stellar 22-3-6 record at home since the start of 2022.
    • Wake Forest finished the 2024 season with a 9-1-1 mark at Spry.
  • Before the loss to Duke late last season, the Demon Deacons held the program record for longest home unbeaten streak at 15 matches.
  • During the 15-game run, eight resulted in a clean sheet for the Deacs as they outscored opponents 35-8.
  • It marked the second-longest active home unbeaten run in the ACC, behind only Florida State's 25.
  • Since the 2021 season, the Deacs are 18-0-2 at home against non-conference opponents in the regular season.

Scouting the Bears
  • The Bears are off to a 4-1-0 start in the 2025 campaign and have outscored opponents 9-4.
    • Their lone loss came at home against the Minnesota Gophers.
    • The four-time Ivy League conference champions have posted a 2-0-0 on the road, with wins over New Haven and UConn. 
  • At the helm for Brown is head coach Kia McNeill, who is in her tenth season with the program.
    • McNeill has guided the Bears to four consecutive Ivy League conference and national championship appearances in 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2023.
  • Sophomore Ayla Sahin paces the Bears' attack with three goals and six points this season. In 2024, Sahin appeared in 17 matches with 11 starts and tallied 945 minutes. 
  • Midfielder Ella Weil led Brown as a freshman with five goals and 13 points, which saw her named Second Team All-Ivy. The Ivy League Rookie of the Year has totaled two goals as a sophomore, including the game-winner against Northeastern last Thursday.
  • Senior Bella Schopp has started all five appearances in the net for Brown, recording six saves and one shutout across four games. The 2024 Ivy League All-Tournament Team member started 16 of 17 games as a junior, posting five shutouts and accumulating 51 saves.
  • In last Thursday's 2-0 home victory against Northeastern, Brown outshot the Huskies 15-1 to earn the clean sheet result.
    • Schopp started between the posts before junior Gurleen Toor entered the match to help the duo secure the combined shutout.

Series History vs. Brown
  • The Demon Deacons hold a 2-0-0 overall record against the Bears, posting home shutouts in both contests.
    • Across the series, Wake Forest has outscored Brown 4-0.
  • In 2007, Wake Forest recorded a 2-0 victory at home with goals from alumni Jill Hutchinson and Amy Smerdzinski.
  • The teams met for the first time in 1999 at Spry Stadium, where the Deacs posted a 2-0 clean sheet victory over the Bears.
  • Most recently, teams were set for a matchup in 2023, but due to weather, it was declared a no-contest.
