The Wake Forest women’s basketball team was led by three double-figure performances from freshman guard Milan Brown, junior guard-forward Mary Carter and freshman guard Caitlyn Jones in the 61-52 loss at Cal.
BERKELEY, Calif. – Despite working its way back from a 16-point deficit, the Wake Forest women's basketball team fell 61-52 against Cal, Sunday afternoon at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif.
The Demon Deacons (12-6, 2-4 ACC) had another excellent game in the paint, with 32 points posted inside, while allowing Cal (10-8, 1-4 ACC) to score just 22, a 10-point deficit. Across 18 games, the Deacs have totaled 558 points in the paint (31.6 per game).
The Deacs in the second half especially were strong in the paint, scoring 24 of the 32 points in the paint in the final 20 minutes of the game.
With a team-high 14 points, junior guard/forward Mary Carter spearheaded the Wake Forest offense. Additionally, the Rocklin, Calif.-native tied sophomore guard Grace Oliver with seven rebounds. Oliver finished with nine points in the game.
Freshmen guards Milan Brown and Caitlyn Jones tallied double-digit performances for the Deacs. Brown went 6-for-14 from the field, while Jones posted a career-best seven assists.
How It Happened
"We needed to do a better job in both of these games finishing at the rim. The big difference as well was the free throws taken differential. They got there 23 times and we only got there six times. In both of these games, we didn't start well enough offensively in the first half. It's tough to come back from double digits especially in the second half. We need to figure out what it is and why it's not clicking to begin the game. We need to find a way to get to the line more and foul less and we're going to be basically even with them on the scoreboard. There are just a few physically and mentally to mature in. We are showing moments and now we need to keep putting them together in stretches. Our resiliency showed on this trip and now we get to go back home and continue to get better." - Megan Gebbia
