Deacs Set for Saturday Night Matchup Against Virginia Tech

The Demon Deacons game against the Hokies was moved up to Saturday night due to approaching inclement weather impacting the area.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – After moving up the game one day due to approaching inclement weather, the Wake Forest women's basketball team is set to host Virginia Tech Saturday with tipoff scheduled for 5:00 p.m. (ET) at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
The Demon Deacons (12-8, 2-6 ACC) are off to their best start in the Megan Gebbia era and are looking to earn their third conference win of the season and the highest NET win so far this season. In the first 20 games, they have been propelled by 17.4 assists per game which ranks 30th in the country and second in the ACC. The Deacs have had the emergence of sophomore forward Grace Oliver as she is averaging a team-high 13.6 points per game and also ranking 10th nationally with 60.7 percent shooting from the floor which ranks first in the ACC. Going into Saturday, the Deacs ranked 22nd nationally and second in the ACC, holding opponents to just 35.9 shooting from the field and also ranking 81st in scoring defense with just 59.8 points per game allowed while also ranking 54th with 27.6 defensive rebounds per game.
The Hokies (15-5, 5-3 ACC) come in riding a four-game winning streak, defeating Syracuse and SMU on the road while also picking up home wins over Boston College and Clemson. Those wins have helped Virginia Tech climb into an NCAA Tournament spot according to the latest projections and they also rank 47th in the latest NET rankings. This is just the sixth true road game for the Hokies so far this season as they hold a 3-2 mark in road games this season. Led by point guard Mackenzie Nelson, Virginia Tech is one of the best teams in the country at taking care of the basketball, holding a 1.14 assist-to-turnover ratio while Nelson has a 2.87 assist-to-turnover ratio which ranks 10th nationally. She also ranks 10th nationally with 5.7 assists per game.
Tipoff for Saturday is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. (ET) at LJVM Coliseum.

Wake Forest has remained a top competitor defensively well into the season, both nationally and in the ACC. Through 20 games, the Demon Deacons sit seventh in the conference, allowing 59.8 points per game and close behind the top teams.
Additionally, the Deacs rank second in the ACC and 22nd in the nation with a 35.9 field goal percentage defense.
Assists On Made Baskets
Wake Forest tallied 14 total assists on the night on 28 made baskets (50.0 percent). In 20 games this season, the Demon Deacons have totaled 348 assists on 507 field goals (68.6 percent) which would mark the highest percentage in the Megan Gebbia era.
The Demon Deacons are averaging 17.4 assists per game, second in the ACC behind Virginia's 19.2.
The Deacs did an excellent job of moving the ball last season, as they assisted on 394 of 667 made baskets this season (59.1 pct.). This was the highest assist percentage in the Gebbia era and the assist percentage ranks in the top 70 percent in the nation according to HerHoopStats.
In 2023-24, the Deacs assisted 404 of 694 made field goals (58.2 percent).
Forcing Them Over
The Deacs forced the Tigers into 12 turnovers on Sunday, and have forced 10 or more takeaways 86 times in the last 89 games, a stretch dating back to January of 2022.
Through 20 games, the Demon Deacons have forced 15.4 turnovers per game.
Owning the Paint
The Demon Deacons had another excellent game in the paint, with 36 points posted inside, while allowing Clemson to score just 24, a 12-point deficit.
Across 20 games, the Deacs have totaled 630 points in the paint (31.5 per game).
Sharpshooting Deacs
Wake Forest had another fantastic performance from three, going 10-for-20 and recording its best three-point field goal percentage of the year. So far this season, the Demon Deacons have knocked down 131 threes (6.6 3FG per game).

- With 8:49 left in the third quarter, the Demon Deacons trailed by 12 points to the Hokies, the largest deficit of the game. Wake Forest responded with a 15-1 run to take its first lead since the 8:54 mark of the first quarter.
- Led by 11 third quarter points from senior guard Elise Williams, the Deacs took a 46-45 lead into the fourth quarter, but were unable to claim the victory.
- Williams ended the night with a team-high 15 points including going 3-of-4 from the free throw line. With her scoring effort on Sunday, the Raleigh, N.C. native moved up three spots on the all-time scoring list and now ranks 19th all-time with 1,207 career points. She needs just 62 more points to move into the top 15 in program history.
- Joining her in double figures were redshirt junior Malaya Cowles who had 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting while senior guard Raegyn Conley posted 10 points while knocking down two of the team's three triples.
